A SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT started by a 15 year old girl went a little awry. Shannon Syfrett wanted to find out how far an email she sent would go and ended up with far more than she had bargained for.
According to Dow Jones, Shannon created an email account with AOL and sent an email to 23 people. The email asked people to send a response and pass the email on. She had expected to receive a few hundred emails back, maybe a few thousand if she was lucky. She ended up with 160,478 responses.

The emails came from 189 countries, from ships at sea, from polar research stations, oil rigs, Navy vessels and just about everywhere else on the surface of the planet. By the end of her science fair project, new emails were arriving every 2.3 seconds.

Shannon shut down the project 17 days early thinking that might be the end of it. Far from it. Despite the fact that the email gave no clues as to her location, some people managed to track her down and phoned to complain that they couldn't get their emails through to her.

Between them, Shannon and her mother claim to have read every email that came in. A staggering task in itself.

I used to get it from my father even. And though his intentions weren't bad, he was a bit mis-informed as to what a real computer virus is, and what it can or can not do.

So, people would end up emailing these "virus warnings" to him, except that they were hoaxes alleging things such as it would infect text files, destroy hard drives, and a bunch of known virus hoaxes which were listed as hoaxes on the antivirus companies websites for virus in this case hoax definitions. He would turn around and forward these emails to me...

After many such messages, I had to several times inform him this stuff isn't real, link him to pages mentioning it as a hoax, and try to explain to him viruses can't infect plain text files, etc...

Edit: Ugh, I'm in a computer lab posting on a computer that has one of these stupid freakin Gateway keyboards on it. The space bar doesn't work anymore unless one pounds on the stupid freakin thing. I think I could give this keyboard a kameha heha right about now. Well I cleaned up the post from what I can see, if anything looks strange, it's this stupid Gateway keyboard.

Jesse (I) Jackson was in Last Party, The (1993) with George Bush
