I have a friends old laptop which he gave to me after he got a new one. I want to get a new hard drive for it and I have a crapload of questions so any help would be greatly appreciated.

He got a virus on it a while back - if I get a new hard drive will I be fine or can any kind of virus affect Mobo, CPu or something along those lines?

If I didn't switch hard drives and just re-formatted it, would the virus be gone?

If I got a new one, what do I need to look for. Obviously it has to fit the laptop, but is it the same as desktop drives, SATA, IDe, etc.?

BTW, it is a HP dv1000t. It is 2 years old. Pentium M 1.6 ghz, 512 RAM, and a 80GB hard drive is that helps.

Thanks alot.

The virus should not have affected the bios etc. Some can, but most don't. So anew drive will be virus free, as will the current drive if you reformat.
