Does anyone else have a sony_ssm.sys non-Plug'n Play driver installed on their system? I found mine when I enabled the "Show hidden devices" in the Device Manager". It is stopped and set to launch "on demand".

Now I wonder, is this the infamous rootkit courtesy of Sony? Mind you though, I never played any Sony music CDs in my computer, I don't have any Sony hardware and neither did I find any confirmation this sony_ssm.sys IS actually the rootkit. Just makes me a bit worried, that's all.

What do you guys reckon?

No the article doesn't mention any sony_ssm.sys driver, it's only a guy in the replies saying:

"I still scratching my head wondering what use is the non-PnP driver installed unvolunteerily on my system named "sony_ssm.sys" enlisted in non-PnP drivers section of hardware devices in XP"

which of course doesn't imply anything. I've looked thru 10 pages of google results trust me and I couldn't find any solid info on whether this really IS the rootkit or not. That's why I'm asking you guys to look in your devices and see what you can find.

its not the same rootkit from sony bmg cds.

but it is a rootkit, which will prevent from copying or launching copied games/programs on your computer.
