Makin' Movie NEED HELP

I am building up a server to store *.avi s for non-linear editing, I notice that when I capture video directly into the server (i.e. camera plugs into workstation 1gbs connection (direct cat5 cable, no hub, router etc) to the server; I get some dropped frames.

I am running XP Pro sp1, followed black vipers list for running tasks, 512 DDR ram, 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron, 1.32TB hard disks (all 7200 rpm ata) 1000 network card for both the workstation and server.

I was debating installing server 2003, HOWEVER...COULD I just optimize this connection in some way and fix this problem!!!

The first thing I would do is bump it up to 1GB of ram. That should help quite a bit.
The Celeron isn't helping you out any either since it doesn't have much cache on it.

Could you go into a little more detail?

What camera are you using?

What is the resolution of the video?

Are you using any codecs or is it uncompressed?

Are you actually recording a live stream while capturing the video? Or are you simply playing the video back in the camera while you capture it?
