Looking at the latest sandbox editor face model shots for Crysis i'm starting to think they look better than UT2007's .. or UE3 in general.
i cant stop stareing at that bold guy's head , cheeks & chin :D . they look almost REAL! (talking about Crysis shot pic no.1)
i mean the lighting , the bumps & even the eye looks are nothing short of amazing & life-like .. i think UE3 just got beaten (in the face modeling department that is) :o

anyway i provided some UT2007 shots for comaprsion :

I can't decide. mho, the lighting plays a part and is lacking in the crysis shots, but the eyes in the C. models do have UT's beat. Tough call between the last UT and the second crysis.

they both kick ass. no doubt.

Both are great, but I'd have to say personally that the Crysis ones have a more natural look to them imo (can't pinpoint why).

Yep thats the word .. they are more "natural". for the UT2007 side only the vortal (third pic) can compete with them .

I like UTs, The lighting looks better in my opinion... aswell as the textures but the animation might be better on Crysis if it can actually look that good... but HL2 still can look better if textures are worked right (get the High Res Texture mod for HL2).

Unreal has a washed out look to them

I went for they both look great. The only thing that I don't think makes it all that fair of a comparison is that UT is ingame and Crysis is in the editor. Either way, I think I higher resolution of the images is needed to really pick out the differences.

You have a point there , but these are the only pics i could grab that are as close as possible to the faces.
if anybody can get better in-game ones , feel free to share!

I voted Crysis but I don't think models will look that good ingame.

I voted crysis too.

They look a lot more lifelike and believible. Its hard to say if its just the lighting in the picture or the actual model though.

I think UT2007's are more detailed, but they just dont look as lifelike to me. It looks more like they are real statues made out of clay or wood.

Ut2007 unnatural
crysis natural

The crysis ones look more real, but the UT ones look way better. Err, cant explain right... Its like they have this artistic look... somewhat... Ah hell, I give up... I love the UT ones better.

UT looks strange when put against Crysis..so i voted for Crysis as it actually has the look of a real person..where as the UT one is very easy to tell it is defeantly a computer generated one

HL2 is pretty nice as well..its amazing how well this engine is just moving forward.

Crysis defiantly the best

I voted for Unreal Tournament 2007.

Crysis, but I have a problem with the ears, they are very choppy.

UT 2007, as many have said it has washed out look (could be the lighting and environment), they also look like clay models.

For these models to look real and be truly interactive they need a true bone structure, vascular system, layered skin, and skin that changes colors with external pressure, emotions, blood pressure, etc. Of course these are games and not simulations/movies (not yet at least).

Environments are getting very good but still look like something out of an early CG movie, you can only go so far with current technologies, pushing the boundaries can sometimes have disastrous effects on the actual gaming experience you are attempting to create. I'm sure someone could make a game that looked almost entirely real, but it would be so utterly slow that you probably would not get a single frame out of it.

It tough to decide, since they both look extremely real.

But still, i'd go for crysis and the "natural" look.

i remember the time when i was all excited about UT2007, but as soon as i saw crysis, UT2007 didnt seem, at least that muchas it used to be, awe-inspiring.

Ut2007 unnatural
crysis natural

that might be true but just because it doesn't look as natural as Crysis doest mean its worse

personally i think they are both great but i prefer the artistic style of the UT2007 one more

10-18-06, 09:49 AM
They both look fantastic, UT2007 obviously has better lighting because it is ingame with a light source.

10-18-06, 09:51 AM
Crysis for me. I prefer the look of the subtle lighting. In the ut2007 shot, it looks a bit unnatural.

10-18-06, 10:01 AM
It's also a bit of an off comparison since UT2K7 isn't really going for a realistic look, so much as a shiny "look how pretty I am!" type of thing.

Crysis has some sci-fi elements thrown in the mix to keep things different, but a lot of it like the jungle areas and physics and so forth seem to keep things grounded in a more plausible "true to life" setting, where UT doesn't make that attempt and just goes all-out, over the top sci-fi. That certainly influences the design choices of the characters and how they are presented.

10-18-06, 10:29 AM
imo, theyre both doing what theyre supozed to, remember, UT isnt focusing in on looking as life like as possible.

10-18-06, 11:36 AM
Alot of people are saying that the UT faces look unatural. Im not 100% sure, but I think that is because UT is usings hand drawn face textures, where as in Crysis, the faces are using photo textures. I think also that UT are pushing alot more polys.

10-18-06, 12:13 PM
Well I think UT2007 is gonna rock but when im playing Instagib im not gonna stop ingame and say that zit doesn't look right on that character face. :D
