XFree86 4.2.99 is supposedly the same code as 4.3 which is coming out in a few days. I was forced to try 4.2.99, as 4.21 and earlier DO NOT support my PNY Geforce4 MX420 properly, either with the nv driver or the Nvidia proprietary drivers (I have tried every hint on every bulletin board with the latter; have given up on the proprietary drivers. The nv driver in 4.2.99 DOES WORK and has all the capabilities I need (2D). That's what I'm using now).
There are some problems with this combination, though. I have to boot using failsafe into text/network and then type KDE. Doing it any other way hangs the machine right after the Nvidia logo comes up. But the failsafe way ends up with KDE 3.1 displayed normally. It doesn't seem to matter whether devfs is enabled or not.
Most things like browsers and editors work fine. But there are some serious problems.
Mandrake Control Center (mcc) hangs KDE instantly, as does xawtv (even after recompiling). Audio volume controls such as kmix don't work -- they don't seem connected to the sound source. After booting 9.0 into text mode, I can hear the audio from my ATI TV tuner card, but the Kmix volume control doesn't affect the volume.
Has anyone else tested a similar combination (especially the new X?).
I don't think that KDE 3.1 has any bearing on it. The same things were happening with 3.0.5.
Please no suggestions to get the Nvidia proprietary drivers to work; I am using nv for the foreseeable future.
