i installed NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.rh80up.athlon.rpm and NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i386.rpm ....
but gl does not work properly ...
have i installed the right packages?
is something else worng ...

That's the wrong RPM for 2.4.18-24. You'll need to rebuild from SRPM or sources. Please see the README for more info.

You're not using RH 8.1. RH 8.1 (beta; the final is not yet out) uses a kernel based on 2.4.20, with a backport of the 2.5 TLS code that causes compiling and running the drivers to fail.

If that's a typo and you have RH 8.0, then follow Andy Mecham's advice and compile it from source.
