Apparently Microsoft wanted $5M up-front from Universal and Fox, the budget went beyond the initial estimate, and Microsoft was taking a large share of the profits.

It wouldn't surprise me if the fear of another video game licence tanking on the big screen had a lot to do with it, too. Sci-fi rarely pulls in any awards for a studio. And giving $150M to a director who hasn't put anything on the big screen is enough to make even the most laid-back studio exec nervous.
