Trying to get a list going on here... what do you all think are the most essential apps for the modest PC user?
My contribution: Winzip
Winzip is nice, but I'm a cheapskate. :) Whenever I'm stuck with a reinstall of Windows, I go with IZArc (http://free.top.bg/izsoft/), which is just a full-featured, and free. I also like to dump Notepad in favor of Note Tab Light (http://www.fookes.com/notetab/). IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) and SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/) round out the list, along with Mozilla or the browser formerly known as Phoenix.
Cheers,
JND

Some of my essential apps include Ad-Aware, Trillian and jv16 Power Tools.
Great, free apps that serve a purpose. :D

Any users of TextPad? :)
Thanks for suggestions for The Bat, btw. I found the website and will try it out. :)

Norton Utilities. :)
My list is too long (I keep an entire CD filled with essential utils). But here is the latest addition to my collection:
DVD Region-Free !
The name sucks and its a little expensive but its cool. It makes your DVD drive behave like its region free without messing with the firmware. This was great for me since I can't find any region free firmware for the drive I have (pacific digital). It works great and I can now watch my PAL DVD collection on my PC. It also has a few extra features like removing macrovision protection and allowing you to skip the FBI warnings.
