AMD previews 4x4 platform
Wolfgang Gruener November 10, 2006 10:45
Munich (Germany) - AMD chose to reveal first official details about its 4x4, dual-socket processor platform at a PR event in Munich. 4x4 apparently is still on track for a November release, while AMD's U.S. representatives aren't ready yet to talk about the firm's answer to Intel's quad-core CPU. AMD confirmed at the event that 4x4 will be introduced with an Nvidia chipset and prices around $1000.
There have been very few processor platforms that have been treated as secretive as AMD's 4x4. Industry sources told TG Daily that the technology will launch on November 14, but - at least to our knowledge - AMD has not engaged in official briefings for the U.S. press yet. A first, very careful, attempt to prepare journalists about the apparently impending product introduction has taken place today in Munich, where desktop marketing director Leslie Sobon confirmed some rumors and provided some launch details.Read more at TGDaily (http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/11/10/amd_4by4_details/)

Interesting...
I thought it wasn't coming until spring or summer.

Sounds costly, and with little advantage over a Core 2 Duo with a single 8800GTX/S card. At least currently, there is little reason for a Quad 8800 and 4 AMD cores.
IMO, maybe later, but I have a feeling even game enthusiats won't go for that right now. And companies, like mine just did for example, will rather go for a DELL sporting dual-dual Woodcrest.
mmm nice server board!!!...this is just what i wanted for my new server!!!

I believe the price includes only the two dual core CPUs, the entry level FX-70 (2.6 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache).
The four GPUs also not included. :thumbdwn: :D
The "entry-level" 4x4 solution will be sold as a dual-processor package and will sell for about $1000. According to Sobon, 4x4 - which stands for four processor cores and four graphics processors - will be upgradeable to quad-core processors, currently code-named "Agena," which are expected to launch sometime in mid-2007.
If I decide to go for AMD upgrade I would buy only one dual core CPU and later exchange it for the real quad-core or maybe even two of them (8 cores). All would depend on the benchmarks and performance/price ratio.
But... there's always been dual socket server boards...
i know that, but most of them you have to use registered RAM, witch is helvaexpensive. this would make a nice cheap server setup.
from my understanding 4x4 isn't meant for servers, rather for gaming...who says you cant use it for a server?... its not like my job depends on it.

We'll have to wait for jackup to buy 2 of these and benchmark them. I also believe it will be a great server platform.

...and you think AMD won't bring out a quad-core server processor?

4x4 will not be a "good" server platform, it is meant for gaming therefore it won't be as good for a server, a server doesnt need 4 GPU cores, a server doesnt need 3D instructions.

Then don't put four GPUs in your server...

That's the point, this CPU will be useless compared to a server CPU, because the server CPU will have optimisations and the standard 4x4 will have optimisations for 3D.

I don't think he's going to be running mission-critical apps, but rather wants to have a server and this is a better solution than a standard desktop being used as a server and far cheaper than an actual server.
So what if it isn't "supposed" to be a server. It'll still work just fine if he chooses to do this. And why are you so upset about it? Calm down and let him spend his money how he wants. Jesus. :rolleyes2

Why do you people seem to not understand where I am coming from? I am simply saying it wont perform as well as a server CPU, sure he can buy this and it will perform great, but still will not perform as well as a server CPU. Besides it was a12ctic that came out with the statement:

Yes, because it WILL make a great server platform. Two dual/quad-core CPUs are better than 1, right?
Even if it's not specifically designed with a server in mind, IT WILL STILL MAKE A GREAT SERVER.

can you tell me a single diffrence between a "server" cpu and one that you have in your machine outside of an extra step to validate the samples at the plant at which they were made....here let me give you a hint ...there are none.

Whats the point of releasing a 4 cpu board if they cant even get their 1 and 2 cpu ones working right. :p

That was going to be the next thing I said if he came back with another "rebuttal."

You can't say crap a12ctic, you're the person who comes out with dumb claims of AMD being better than Intel at the moment. Dumbass fanboy.
