Why would they not?

I am also hoping for more information like, when and how much.

I am sure that if that information was available people would already be talking about it... Be patient, I don't see this happen before Vista is released at the very least.

I'm sure this is one of the 9 8-series cards planned to come out in the next year that NVIDIA was talking about earlier in the week.

Well, think of it this way.
Right now, there is no competition for 8800. So they're going to basically take profits on it right now then sometime in 2007 release budget versions when ATi has something to answer with.

Of course they will bring out the 8600 cards. However as they are the only DX10 cards on the market they can milk the high end for the time being.

To target the MSRP 199US segement I think it will need to be around this level this is just a guess, based on extrapolations and past trends. :)

600+MHZ Core
64 SP, 12 ROPs, 16TAU
~420 Million Transistors
65nm node
~155 mm2
192 Bit Memory Interface (maybe..hopefully :P)
2 GHZ+ GDDR4
H2 2007

As fast as X1950 XTX in Quake 4
As fast as 7900 GTX in F.E.A.R.
As fast as X1950 XTX in Half Life 2: Episode 1
As fast as 7900 GTX in G.R.A.W.
As fast as 7900 GTX in Black and White 2.
~ 35% Faster then X1950 XTX in Oblivion.
As fast as X1950 XTX in Battlefield 2.

Talking about moderate resolutions of 16x12 with 4xAA/16XAF. :)

This about where the product should be minimum given past trends.

256bit bus would be nice. I'm tired of budget cards being limited to 128bit bus only. 192 would be a progress but still a very small one...

Yeah...since they've made such a huge leap on the GTX and GTS, I can't see why they wouldn't have a 256-bit bus for the mid-level cards and 128 or 192 for the budget cards (8300).
