View Full Version : R350 on .13 not .15 ?

Well everyone thought R350 will be on .15 process and RV350 on .13
Now it seems R350 will be only on .13 :D But is this true :eek2:
The R350 chip will be the high-end successor to ATI's Radeon 9700 chip. A new version of that chip geared toward the mainstream market is also coming in the next 30 days, he said.
That Radeon 9700 variant will be built using 130 nanometer technology, or .13 micron, which is a reference to the size of the feature sets on the chips. The .13 micron technology promises better speeds and lower costs than past standards, like .15 micron.

what i found more interesting is the fact that they said it would be the "highest performing chip till the end of the year".
That seems to mean that the r400 will not be here this fall as we thought.
That is fine with me as maybe i will pick up the r350 instead.

Personally, I think it's more likely that those statements were based on outdated, inaccurate, or misunderstood information. i.e., I think it is a mistake and the R350 is still a .15u part. Too many people "in the know" have all but confirmed this.
As for the comment of being guaranteed the best performance with R350 through the end of the year, that could be interpreted in several ways:
1. They don't expect R400 to come out this year, but expect the R350 to be a match for whatever nVidia releases (NV35).
2. They don't expect R400 to come out this year, nor expect the NV35 to come out this year, in which case the R350 will be the leader until 04.
3. They expect the R350 to be a match for whatever nVidia has on the table until the R400 is released later in the year (NV35), meaning that nVidia won't have any window of opportunity to take the lead.
4. They expect the R350 to be match for the NV30 and don't expect the NV35 to be released until after the R400, meaning the R350 will secure the performance lead at least until the R400 launch.
I think #4 is most likely, or perhaps an outside shot at #1 or #3.
Bigus dickus is correct.
They actually said the "variant of 9700 would be 13nm"(rv350).
Which we already knew.
You have to read it slowly.
It never says the flagship chip will be 13nm.

Agreed, i woudlnt consider Reuters to be a tech savvy news source.
It dose also state that the .13 chip (RV350) will be made by TMSC. What company makes ATI's other chips?
Unless they are wronga bout TMSC, it would 'seem logical' that the yeilds for the Nvidias .13 and ATI .13 chips would be around the same. Probly even the percent of chips that will run at high clock speeds would be aprox the same? Anyone who knows about foundarys wanna comment?

TSMC are producing R350/RV350. Not 100% sure on this, but I believe UMC have the RV280 contract (for cost reasons).
Yields for RV350 should be considerably better than those for NV30/NV35 due to die complexity/clockspeed considerations.

you are reading it all wrong, the .13 version of that chip geared toward the mainstream market reefered to there is very clearly the rv350.
it would not shock me if we see a r350 at .13 eventualy but the article says nothing of that sort.

Well both articles have only R350 there is no RV350
so there is no strong proof that next fastest radeon will be on .15 and or .13
They just say R350 based on .13 so go figure
Could be flagship on .13 aswell as lowend on .13 everything is possible.

The yahoo article's source is Reuters... as pointed out by Philibob.
And there is pritty strong proof that the r350 is .15.......
I am sure the journalist only uses his computer to type up that article.

Well i guess we will find out in a couple of weeks when ATI puts more info on webpage :p
two seprate thoughts:
The R350 chip will be the high-end successor to ATI's Radeon 9700 chip.
r350
A new version of that chip geared toward the mainstream market is also coming in the next 30 days, he said.
new version of 9700, as in the rv350!
reading comprehension is a good thing. ;)

Kyle is correct. Some folks need to work on their reading comprehension. You also need to remember that this information came from a Goldman Sachs IB conference and they have to be careful regarding forward-looking statements.
1) R350 = The R350 chip will be the high-end successor to ATI's Radeon 9700 chip.
2) RV350 = A new version of that chip (meaning the RV350) geared toward the mainstream market is also coming in the next 30 days, he said. That (meaning the RV350) Radeon 9700 variant (both the R350 and RV350 are variants of the R300 core) will be built using 130 nanometer technology, or .13 micron, which is a reference to the size of the feature sets on the chips.
If you need further clarification from that news byte or want to hear it from the proverbial horse's mouth, here (http://customer.ibeam.com/GOLD005/022403a_by/wmp_slides.asp?speakerid=698) is a link to the audio webcast and presentation where Dave Rolston is presenting the info used in the Reuters article.

Before you step up to the plate and look really stupid. I suggest you listen to the webcast link I provided where Dave Rolston, VP of Engineering for ATI speaks... then LISTEN.
I'd also like to add that the information he presented is the same as the information Dave Orton, COO of ATI presented at the CSFB Conference I attended several weeks earlier.
It's very clear that the R350 = .15m and RV350 = .13m.

i will lay some rep on the line for it; who ever looses has to make a 300 post on how stupid they are in the open forums. :tongue2:
so we on GlowStick?

Bah make it 500 posts and they have to provide a scanned copy of their elementary, junior high, high school and college transcripts so we can see how poorly they did in English.
The post also has to be proof-read (for accuracy and obvious reasons :banghead: ) and approved before it is put up on the forums.
Folks really shouldn't assume that just because it's using a newer manufacturing tech, it has to be the high-end product.
The other thing to remember is that the reuters piece is a news article and subject to interpretation by the reporter. It is not a press release and chances are the reporter doesn't know a damn thing about the industry.
I choose cash instead. :)

well i am dyslectic so any proof-reading will have to be handled by someone else. ;)
