For those who are wondering- here are a few benchmarks comparing a 7900GT (standard clocked) SLI setup to a single 8800GTS:

All game settings/resolutions were the same for both cards- I used 1280 x 1024 for all games

FEAR
7900GT SLI: min 29 avg 70 max 169
8800GTS: 31 70 161

3DMark06
7900GT SLI : 6906
8800GTS: 7293

CS:S
7900GT SLI: 142.09 fps
8800GTS: 156.01 fps

As you can see you're not losing anything going with a GTS- the image quality alone is worth it- 2d is very crisp compared to the 7900GT. The card seems to idle at 64C which is a lot higher but the fan is very quiet. Fantastic card IMHO.

This info convinced me, i also have a X2 4200+, im upgrading my 7800GT SLI to a single 8800GTS my 400W psu should work? (14+15=29 amps on +12V).

4x for both games

Nope- nothing is overclocked. CPU. memory and GPU are all stock. My goal was to replace my SLI setup with one card that is as fast or faster- the GTS met that goal for me. The graphics are so much more crisper on the 8800GTS- it's even great to run Quake4 without the shimmering now.

your CS:S bench seems a bit low .. i run at 1600x1200 4xAA 16xAF, TAASS, and gamma correct and i get 173 fps ? and i only have a single core cpu, mind you my clock speed is a bit higher. nice upgrade from my 7800GT sli setup :)

Probably because my dual core is running 500mhz slower than your cpu- I don't think CS:S takes advantage of the dual core much so you can just treat my CS:S scores like running a single cpu. Plus my memory timings are stock too- I'm using Kingston valueram.

Can you test F.E.A.R. at 1920x1200 resolution? What min/avg fps do you get? Thanks in advance.

Sorry- my monitor doesn't go up that high.

you cant add rails and get a total, it doesn't work like that

Just don't bench with AF because the numbers will be off due to the much tighter AF the G80 series uses. Heck its default AF is as good as AMD HQ AF.

You mean ATI?

I'll bench FEAR later tonight at 1200 x 1600- what settings do you want me to use?

ATI=AMD :)

Which really stinks btw- I was a big Nvidia and AMD fan- looks like I will be switching to Intel soon....

True, but that's kinda like saying Dell=Alienware

4xAA/16xAF.
I really want to know how much I can lost with X2 3800 (2.5Ghz) + 8800GTX(I'm thinking about buying) at high resolution.

Nvidias 12V AMP requirement is for combined 12V current.

With a combined 29A he will have plenty of power.

Sorry about the delay:

FEAR 1600 x 1200 everything max soft shadows OFF:

min 30
avg 66
max 143

0%<25fps
19% 25-40fps
81% >40fps

Here's the kicker- soft shadows ON:

min 30
avg 67
max 150

0%<25%
17% 25-40fps
83% >40fps

Was suprised by the soft shadows enabled scores. Don't know what to make of that.
