View Full Version : How much slower is XP64 Forceware compared to 32 bit?

I am just putting together a new 3d workstation build and was considering going to XP64 or Vista64 to get around the 2GB per process limitation found with 32 bit OS's. Just wondering how the Forceware support is for 64 bit OS's. Is the same anywhere comparable to the regular 32 bit vresions of Windows, or is it a lot slower? Also, how bad are the compatibility issues when trying to run legacy 32 bit applications. I also do a bit of gaming in my spare time, so I assume that this would be a no go with the 64 bit version of windows?

For the most part xp64 is compatible with most games and 32 bit apps. 64 bit forceware are very stable. There are a few quirks though. Games with Starforce may not work, older 32 bit AV programs do not work and there is no official drover for 8800gtx. But for the most part it is more stable and faster than regular xp. Go for it man.

its neither faster or slower

64bit will only shine if you actually want to go over 4gb ram, but currently there is no reason for that either

Sure seems faster to me.

Well, he is going to be running it as a workstation so 4gb for heavy editing might be needed depending on the application.

Thanks for the info guys. Yes, I am running into memory problems right now with WinXP32. Even with the /3GB switch enabled geometry heavy scenes become unstable or crash when my 3DSMax mem usage hits around 2.2-2.3GB mark, even though I have 4GB of system memory.

Thats the most ignorant thing I have ever heard, my x64 machine runs circles around the same machine running x86, with 2GB of ram.

It depends on weather or not the game supports / make use of the 64bit os...otherwise we will see little to no difference..

QFT.

If an application makes use of 64-bit, it can be quite a bit faster. It all depends.

Servers can benefit from the extra memory space as well.

Windows itself is way faster. I think apps/games run the same but I don't have 2 GB ram so maybe I miss out.
