Big GPU are going the Way of the Dodo, long live the swarm of little hopefully cheaper GPUs.
First R700 info, and it is cool

THE ATI R600 will represent the last of it's breed, the monolithic GPU.
It will be replaced by a cluster of smaller GPUs with the R700 generation. This is the biggest change in the paradigm since 3Dfx came out with SLI, oh so many years ago.
Basically, if you look at the architecture of any modern GPU, R5xx/6xx or G80, it comprises pretty modular units connected by a big interconnect. Imagine if the interconnect was more distributed like say an Opteron and HT, you could have four small chips instead of one big one.
This would have massive advantages on design time, you need to make a chip of quarter the size or less, and just place many of them on the PCB. If you want a low-end board, use one, mid-range use four, pimped out edition, 16. You get the idea, Lego.
It takes a good bit of software magic to make this work, but word has it that ATI has figured out this secret sauce. What this means is R700 boards will be more modular, more scalable, more consistent top to bottom, and cheaper to fab. In fact, when they launch one SKU, they will have the capability to launch them all. It is a win/win for ATI.
There have been several code names floating around for weeks on this, and we hear it is pretty much a done deal. Less concrete is the rumour that G90 will take a similar path, but things are pointing in that direction.
G80 and R600, or most likely their descendants in the next half-generation step, will be the biggest GPUs ever. I am not sure this is something to be proud of, but the trigger has been pulled on the next big thing. The big GPU is dead, long live the swarm of little GPUs. µ
Something like only 7600 around with quad and oct sli ...
Only vendors should benefit from something like that (because they should need less SKU's)
we shall see ...
oh great...now were going to need sli profiles for every game we play....great..

In otherwords, "R600 is going to suck, but we promise the R700 will be even better! Don't by Nvidia products please!!! We beg you!!! How will we feed our families!!!"
Lol, the inquirer doesn't know **** about the R600, and now they want us to believe they know something about the R700? Hah!

You guys should read up on DX 10.1
the modified API is going to have support for multi GPU's on the same PCB.
Think of it like this....
who will win in a fight?
a) one 250 pound man?
or
b) two 180 pound men?

Not man enough to use your normal login ID i see? had to create a new login just to "tell me off".
There is only 1 thing I don't like about computer companies. Promising products will be out in the future that are going to be "sooo much better than we have now" just because you are LOSING. Look at my rant on AMD. AMD is promising us the world, but the real fact is that right now they have a 2nd rate chip that can't hold a candle to Intel. Look at my rant on ATI/AMD's R700. Again, same thing. Promising a chip will be fast that has at LEAST a good year(most likely more) until its released. By that time Nvidia will probably have a card out that still mops it to the floor.
AMD is shouting out garbage about "future" products in order to take sales away from Intel. They want people to not buy Conroe and just "wait to see what happens with AMD". Same with ATI/AMD. They want people to not buy the 8800 GTX just because of what "the future holds".
Call me a flamer. Call me whatever you want. I hate how AMD/ATI are handling LOSING. I have very constructive posts on this forum, I am not allowed to dispute ONE issue? Please. Give me a break. AMD/ATI need to release quality products instead of this "promise" crap.

i don't really see the marketing PR in that article that would allude to what you're ranting about. it is accepted that the Niagara architecture and applicable idea is promising (enough so that Intel and AMD are hopping on the bandwagon.) reading the article reveals to me more of a design review than them using buzz words or propaganda in order to manipulate the stock market. also it does not seem to be from AMD/ATI themselves, as its a very unprofessionally written interpretation article. perhaps you should rant about Charlie Demerjian for spreading "fud." i have not called you any derogatory names, and i would appreciate if you would not assume that i am about to. (unless it is your intention to troll?)

unless one of those guys happens to be Robocop. In which case bullets do not harm robocop. They just make him angry. At which point he takes off his own leg and uses it as a gun. Never mess with robocop. Never

Unless you're Magneto. Then if you're Magneto, you can mess with Robocop...because Robocop is mostly metal, and Magneto can crush Robocop with a single thought. Mess with Robocop only if you're Magneto.

Funny! I wonder why nvidia is usually the first to realease new tech to market, then.
It makes me sick how these guys try to make us think ATI is allways on the forefront of technology and who has all the great ideas. NVIDIA is just a shameless company that simply does copy-paste. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
