hello all..

i read the post regarding the availability of the latest nVidia driver..
one question .. is there another way to achieve what done by the gmake command?
I'm having problem with my pcbsd 1.2 and my graphic card..
I ran everything as mentioned in nvidia website (compat5x, linux compatibility are there) but when I reboot I get the NVRM: RM_INIT-ADAPTER() FAILED and
UNABLE TO FIRE UP LOCAL DISPLAY :0; DISABLING.

as I noticed that running the nvidia-xconfig doesn't really config the XF86Config file as it needs.. I guess the nvidia-settings was not funtional.. so i'm compiling it..
to get the gmake i neet to get the gtk2.0 (does it have to be 2.0 or can it be the latest?).. to get the gtk I need to get the glib2, the pango and atk..
before continuing.. can you relate that error I'm having with the fact that nvidia-settings didn't work properly..
when I get that error I don't get the kde screen .. so I log as root and ee the xf86config file.. i edited it with the right horizontal/vertical sync rates (31-83 56-75) .. does not work.. ee again the file and just change nvidia to vesa.. then rebooting I get kde 1024x768 max..
fixing all the gtk/pango/glib errors is going to take a HUGE amount of time and skills that i still don't have..
any hint?

to answer your question:

drivers: The 1.0-9629 NVIDIA.. the latest.

I ran nvidia-xconfig and not nvidia-settings because after i compiled it when I run it I get the shared libray libgtk... missing and I can't fix that..

login: NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed (0x31 :0xffffffff :978)

X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling

then normally I log on as root and I ee the XF86Config file to get rid of the 'nvidia' part in the driver section and replace it with 'vesa'. then reboot and get the KDE 1024x768 resolution.
Few minutes ago this didn't work... and i keep getting the

X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling

I hope the extra info is enough.. and thanks again! it's a brand new laptop and I don't have personal data on it yet.. so I can try/risk anything..

reinstalling the OS as I messed it up a bit... I will try the driver u suggest and revert to u with the outcome..

yes Zander .. it also happens with the 8776 drivers.. this time the error hexadecimal was:

login: NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed (0x31 :0xffffffff :988)

.. however.. this time..

1. while i was rebooting .. when gui went off and saw the command line that shows the reboot routine.. I saw somewhere (it was too fast!) the name of my Nvidia GeForce 7600 for the first time.
2. I still didn't run nvidia-settings cause it was taking ages to install gtk+-2 and all its dependencies.. therefore I edited the XF86Config manually..

Is the nvidia-settings essential to be run?

No, `nvidia-settings` is not required to start X with the NVIDIA X driver. What kind of notebook (brand/model) are you using, exactly?

ok... there are some changes.. I gave up pcbsd 1.2.. will wait eventually further developments.. but I didn't quite like how it behaved towards my efforts to get my nvidia card working (countless and since I moved away from that OS I'll spare you the details).
My Hardware is laptop HP Pavilion DV8323ea mounting a nVidia geforce go 7600 (256RAM). Monitor WXGA 17'' max resolution 1440x900. 1Gb RAM. Intel Centrino Duo 1.6 Ghz.

I moved to RoFreeSBIE.. another unix client based on freebsd 6.1 like pcBSD, and in fact scenario looks different.. still cannot load drivers properly but it seems behaving better than pcbsd.. I'll explain:

point 1

from dmesg:

then few lines down...

running nvidia-settings gives me the:

/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libgtk-x11-2.0.so.400" not found, required by "nvidia-settings"

i know what that means... I have to compile nvidia-settings from source..having tried that several times on pcBSD and knowing what it means to resolve all dependencies.. gmake... gtk.. atk.. pango.. versions mismatching.. and never succeeding.. I'd like to avoid until possible. that's why I asked you if it's required.

point 3

I ran nvidia-xconfig and from the XF86Config.backup (attached to this post) I got the XF86Config (also attached to this post). but rebooting does not give me a better resolution than 1024x768.. although I see the nVidia logo at the last phase of booting.

point 4

from the kdeinfocenter the OpenGL shows info in the jpg file attached.

point 5

when installing RoFreeSBIE I was asked if I wanted to load nVidia drivers.. I enabled that option.. and therefore I didn't install any extra drivers so far..

any hints?

The kdeinfocenter information suggests that the driver is installed and working correctly; if in doubt, please attach the X log file and the output of `ldd glxinfo`, as well as `glxinfo`.

well.. if driver is working why do I get 1024x768 as max resolution in 'Display Configuration' in KDE...
I'll get the X log and upload it in few minutes...

i've upgraded to 8774 driver.. Xlog is confirming that but when I executed make install i got after a while:

amazing.. now I even commented the horiz and vertic parameters..

and it just does not change anything????? no different errors.. and still 1024x768 resolution!!!
what's wrong here?? maybe Edid passing wrong info? is Edid used laptop monitor too?

added the

Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE" parameter and decommented the horiz and vertical actual parameters in the monitor section... nothing!

then i went drastic and used..

Option "UseEDID" "FALSE" but nothing...

and in the X log I even found

(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "1280x1024"; removing.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1024x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "800x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "640x480"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1024 x 768
(--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (98, 99); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config option

this is turning into joke now...

So the problem is that the 1280x1024 mode is invalidated? Please remove any EDID related X configuration file options, start X with the -logverbose 6 option and then attach the resulting X log file.

I was using the 'Options' lines in the wrong place..
noticed that they have to go below the nvidia line.. like this..

this way I had no display at all.. I had to ctrl+alt+F1 to get a console and edit XF86Config to get the gui back.

I also tried

and I've noticed that fonts got smaller.. and refresh rate went from 60 to 75Hz but still nothing better than 1024x768 available and the usual line

ok guys...

help..

I've tried everything..
the last now is I ran startx -- -logverbose 6 and attached you have the x org log.. I ran it with edid enabled by default and no horiz and vert parameters specified in XF86Config

the funny thing is that it shows the 1440 max res (of which my card is capable.. as valid!!! :D hahahaha!!

but it does not give it as available to me...

Hi Mestam,

Short answer: I'd recommend changing your xorg.conf to request the modes:

Modes "nvidia-auto-select" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

(you could replace "nvidia-auto-select" with "1440x900"; they will both
correspond to the same thing in your configuration; 1440x900 is the
native resolution of your DFP, and will be the mode that looks the best
on your DFP)

You can't do 1280x1024, and even if you could, it wouldn't look good
because the GPU would have to scale horizontally from 1024 pixels in
your desktop to 900 pixels displayed on your DFP.



Long answer: there are several reasons why no 1280x1024 modes are
getting validated for your DFP. Some of them are configuration issues,
but there is also a hardware limitation, too.

1) In the verbose log you attached, all the 1280x1024 modes are getting
discarded because the pixelclock (the number of pixels, in millions, that
the mode requires to be sent to the DFP every second) of the 1280x1024
modes is considered to be larger than what the DFP can accept; the DFP's
max pixel clock is, in this case, inferred from the list of modes in
the EDID. You could work around this with "NoEdidMaxPClkCheck" flag to
the "ModeValidation" option.

2) The NVIDIA X driver defaults to using the HorizSync and VertRefresh
ranges from the DFP's EDID. After addressing issue #1, you might
encounter problems here. You can set the "UseEdidFreqs" option to FALSE
to make the X driver using the frequency information from the Monitor
section instead.

3) Even if you address the frequency validation issues above, the X driver
is still going to prohibit 1280x1024, because it has inferred from the
EDID that the DFP's native resolution is 1440x900. This means that the
NVIDIA GPU must scale from the mode size to the DFP's native resolution.
The NVIDIA GPU can scale from a smaller mode size UP to 1440x900, but
the NVIDIA GPU cannot scale from a larger mode size DOWN to 1440x900
(1280x1024 has more pixels, horizontally, than 1440x900). Even if the
GPU was capable of downscaling from a 1280x1024 desktop to a 1440x900
native resolution on the DFP, it wouldn't look crisp, and there would
be filtering and you would likely lose some information in your desktop.

For the crispest image, it's recommended to run your desktop at the
native resolution of your DFP. In this case, that's 1440x900.

As soon as I get back home today I will test your suggestions and revert back to you.
However.. that explain why setting the Option "UseEDID" "FALSE" I had no screen at all! I find hard to believe though the monitor can't display the 1280x1024 resolution.. however.. let me test your suggestions and see..

You saw it right..

1440x900 is the native resolution and I modified the XF86Config (I don't have the xorg.conf file) adding the value suggested..
it works great.. don't know yet about performance and stuff.. but I am not a gamer.. just wanted something better than 1024x768..

Hi !

From the XF86Config file it seems that your laptop monitor was not probed.

This is done if X has a bug or if you don't have used the menu
Enable nvidia driver from initial_config.sh.

If you have used nvidia_config .sh script from /scripts/CardDetect the monitor can't be probed and the max resolution will be 1024x768.

To obtain something more usefull do:

Remove or rename /etc/X11/XF86Config , type init 1 , wait for prompt to appear , type exit , login as root and after that run initial_config.sh script then use Enable Nvidia Driver from the menu.
Also you must add desired resolution at 24 bit Depth "1440X900".
