View Full Version : How about this for 680i cooling?

Okay so the MCP is behind the 8800GTX on the 680i. So if you want to cool it with anything but the stock pipe system its pretty much the vantec iceberg (as suggested by jAkUp).

But what about this the HR-05-SLI (http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main_product_hr05sli.htm)

Think it will work? Hell you can even add a 70mm fan over it.

Roffles. Where in the world are you going to find room to mount that thing? You know that the southbridge sits right underneath the primary card, right? Wait--are you talking about the eVGA board or something else?

I've tried two different chipset coolers now that haven't fit. One of the vantec iceberqs, which was inadvertently advertised as a combo chipset/VGA cooler didn't fit and a Thermaltake Crystal Orb that sat too high off the board and didn't give enough clearance for the card.

I'm now thinking about just leaving a heatsink off and thermal-taping a sunon 40mm fan straight to the chip. There just isn't room for much of anything to put there.

Like this:

with a 80mm fan pulling air through it blowing upward.

Just a thought that it might be better/quieter than jAkUp's vantec iceberg.

I guess you could try it. That tall heatsink is sitting right behind that hot graphics card, though, and that won't help it a bit. The back of the GTX's get very hot.

I dunno. By this time, I'm convinced that passive cooling is just useless. Every board that I've ever had with it sucked as far as temps go. Heatpipes just don't seem to do the job right now.

The Vantec Iceberq jakup has isn't that loud. I think it's rated at 26cfm or so. That's pretty quiet. I'm just wondering how he got it to fit, because I couldn't get the Thermaltake Crystal Orb to fit on mine and by looking at the specs, it's smaller than the Iceberq is.

Hmmm, here is the exact cooler I am using:

That fit perfectly without any modification whatsoever... they do make a few different ones.

I thought you were using watercooling for the noth bridge? or is this just the south bridge?

Thanks for the link. Yeah, I was trying another Vantec out that had a lot better airflow rating than that one, but it turned out to be too big for the southbridge. I was a little hesitant about it, but they called it a combo chipset/VGA cooler so I thought it might fit it.

How much does that thing really help your temps on the MCP, jakup? That little fan only puts out like 3.5cfm, which isn't much.

Dazz--When you take the northbridge heatsink/heatpipe combo off, it removes the heatsink that sits on the southbridge as well. It's all integrated, so once you watercool the northbridge chipset you have to arrange for some kind of cooling on the southbridge, as well.
