My searching was futile so here it is:

Is this fix needed or recommended along with the reg. editing for the Conroe cpus or is it just for the AMD crowd?

Thanks

As far as i know, the hotfix is only necessary for some AMD cpus. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

AMD only - no patches needed for intel guys.

The reason no driver is needed is because Intel had hyperthreading ages ago...Thier dual cores are made in a similar manner, thus support for intels dual cores was written into windows years ago and require no driver at all...

You mean KB896256? I would recommend installing it, as it has much newer kernel than XP SP2. I think it has better performance for *any* dualcore, not only bugfixes.

I installed and activated it a while ago. Thanks for the help. :)

I found my 3dMark2006 score went from 7700 to 8400 after I installed the hotfix.

Mine from from 8550 to 9000+ after installing the hotfix and I'm using a C2D/8800GTS. Apparently these provide a little extra oomph even for dual-core Intel chips and is not just for AMD. Oddly, my CPU score didn't go up at all in 3DM06. It was the graphics scores that rose.

Can anyone else confirm this actually makes any difference to C2D users and these guys don't just have messed up windows installs? :p

Don't think 64bit XP requires it.

Installed it, ran some benchmarks, no difference in performance at all.. no increase in 3dmark or pcmark..

Using E6600, guys don't waste your time with this.. You don't need it.

The KB896256 hotfix fixed the stuttering I had with a few games (NHL06 & Raven Shield). Before I needed to launch those games with winlauncherxp to make sure they would only run on one CPU. Now everything works fine without winlauncherxp.

I just put together a new system so it's a relatively fresh install with XP SP2. The system was benchmarked prior to installing the hotfix (after rebooting), hotfix installed, system rebooted, ran 3DM06 again and got a 500+ point boost. I've been building/upgrading computers for myself, family, and friends since '94, so I'm not exactly new at this.

Maybe this hotfix doesn't have the same effect for everyone with C2Ds? Chipsets, hardware, and software configurations could be a factor.

Sure. Two people reporting gains doesn't make for a trend. But neither doesn't one person who doesn't get those same gains. ;)
