I feel so ashamed right now:o

linkage (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=37451)

With the router does that mean I will be able to use the internet connection on my new rig without this one having to be turned on?

Forgive me for the n00b question:cry:

Short answer: you will be able to use the internet connection with that computer turned off... however if you had a hub then the server needs to be on all the time to run DHCP

What it does is it allows you to connect serveral PC's to one broadband connection.

for example 4 PC's to one cable outlet. The speed will vary to what the other computers are downloading or uploading. These Routers are mostly used for business and offices.

Right time to order, sharing files and such is not an issue as long as I can use the net connection without having both turned on at the same time:cool:

oh btw you need two ip's ;) unless you wanna make one machine a server but then that has to be on all the time

what do you mean? That is the beauty of a router. It acts as the host DHCP Machine so the modem only assign's one IP to the router and then the router assign's internal network IP's like 192.168.1.2 to the rest of the computers connected (max of 255 comps i believe) giving them all internet access from 1 modem/1 external ip.

Well I will be having a max of 3 systems on this, so that won't be a problem:)

NAT, my son.

You don't need 2 IPs. You think everybody would have a router if they had to pay more per month to use it with both computers? hehehe ;)

dont buy that model, if you like to play counter-strike and use vioce comuncation anyway. damn thing will boot you whenver you try to talk and fire at the same time. firmware updates don't help, linksys doesn't help, it is a lost cause.

on a side note, i could give you a good deal on a used one if you like. ;)

or not? and why can't I delete this?

I realized that what I said probably isn't right... have to ask the guy what he said exactly

ya, i have heard multiple complaints from others on the same model so would defneatly be issue to consider if you did. other than that though it is a nice little router and should suit your needs just great. :)

i supose selling you mine would be a rather silly though as shiping it over the pond would be a bit costly.

D-link 704P is the best router ever. Print server even, I love this thing

Get D-Link....I hate Linksys! Bah

I had some cash to spend so I got my self a Zywall 10 and a switch :) Phat setup if you ask me :D

D-Link? *stab*

Crappy Wi-Fi stuff. Linksys Wi-Fi is where it's at... unless you're a Crazy Bastard and buy Cisco :p

Actually.... if you want a REAL router, find an old box that runs pretty quietly and use the Linux Router Project. :p
