Well having read the comments in this thread. My observation on the suject is that Nvidia have no problem in releasing RTM Vista drivers for all the cards that they make apart from the 8800 gts /gtx , that is the bit I find troubling.

My question is why? yes Vista is not on sale but Nvidia are ok with the other cards but not the 8800 series
I would guess that because of the new hardware architecture in the G80, a new OS from MS, and D3D10, coding the drivers is not something quickly done. NVIDIA seems to be having problems making drivers perform properly for older cards in Vista and has many issues with drivers for the 8800s in XP. There's likely quite a learning curve involved and it's all been dumped on their plate in a very short time frame.

I'd love to have working Vista drivers too but NVIDIA really needs to get the 8800s playing nice with XP first before moving on to another OS that few will be using in the immediate future. With all the paths they are traveling the NVIDIA driver team would have to be stretched pretty thin about now. Maybe they deserve the benefit of the doubt and a bit of patience?

all of you STFU and get over it

Vista has been released EARLY, it was not supposed to be RTM untill december, becoz of the stability of the end beta (you could call it RC4... build 5900's) they released it, as the programs major bugs and stuff had been sorted out.

the drivers will be ready when they are ready, and no matter how much you bitch, or whine or complain, it won't make them release the drivers.

SO STFU AND STOP YOUR GOD DAMN BITCHING OR GO TO ATI, WE WON'T MISS YOU

You have a serious attitude problem!

windows vista is out today. Now you can buy a new computer with vista installed. You can't buy it without a new computer until 30/1/07
Yes, you can, OEMs are shipping them as off today.

Too bad any of them with 8800's in them are going to be considered pirate machines.

That's the rule, if you couldn't tell.

Yeah! nVidia hates 8800 series! Yeah!

I don't see a single OEM including Vista instead of XP (hell, I don't even see any of them offering Vista at all); all of them have been upgrades, which they're saying will be available sometime in Feb 07. Not even VoodooPC has Vista included.

I just want to chip in on this 8800 support for vista issue....

The current situation is there are drivers for all cards except the 8800 series. What's the major difference between the 8800s and all other cards? DirectX10.

We know nvidia work on several different driver revisions at once, eg. different teams working on 97.2x and 97.8x etc etc.

It's quite possible that DX10 and 8800 series support was never meant to be included in 9x.xx drivers. It's not part of the development plan for those drivers.

My own guess is that the ForcewareX drivers are the first set being developed with the goal of including 8800 3D support and DX10 support in vista.

I also personally think this is a good way to approach driver development, rather than trying to force 8800 support into driver sets that were never intended to support those cards (at least under the new vista driver model).

ForcewareX aren't too far off, i'm sure everyone can relax until then. I can understand people being pissed, if i were interested in developing for DX10, i'd be pretty miffed that the hardware and the OS are available, but no driver to pull them together.

On a seperate note, is anyone else interested in aero performance improvements with these new drivers for the supported cards? There are some instances such as rapidly updated window controls, that the old winXP GDI+ performs much better at, eating a lot less CPU time. I hope either nvidia or microsoft can sort that out, as it seems to undermine the whole benefit of switching window compositing onto the graphics card. :)

So I figured I'd post... I went looking for Vista 8800 drivers for development and in the NVidia developers forum someone had asked where they were (they don't tend to post drivers for developers anymore since they'd get leaked).

The response was they wouldn't be releasing drivers for RC2 as it'd require distributing some of Microsoft's dll's which they wouldn't be allowed to do, and that they'd have RTM drivers by the time the December DX SDK is released. The December SDK will be the first SDK which syncs DX10 and Vista RTM, as such you can't do any DX10 development until it's out anyway, based on past DX SDK releases, I would imagine it'd be out on the 11th. I assume the driver could be out a bit before that as Microsoft would freeze the SDK days before the 11th, but who knows. The Nvidia representative on the forum didn't give a specific date, only 'by the time the SDK is available'.

Just wish they'd give everyone else an "update".

Sorry, just when I read that, I could not think of anything less sarcastic to say. I'll tone it down, but obviously nVidia has nothing against 8800 series and I thought it was just kind of shocking that someone would actually think that.

The culprit here is clearly MSFT. And you guys have been cursing NV all this time.

Driver fails to work on mine - Vista x64. Tried two differnet releases (the one on the first page) and the Guru3d one. No problems installing just won't load -just get an unknown device. The 7800 GTX is listed in the inf file but I guess I'm not having much luck.

You guys are crying for Geforce 8 support but right now I would settle for some nview (nana2)

Getting an access denied when trying to go back to the Vista included drivers now! And there doesn't appear to be an uninstaller. Thanks nv.

Downloading now and will post back with info using Vista RTM and have a go700GTX (will prob need a moded INF)

Sorry, it took me a while to get these drivers in good working condition. When I did these are the best Vista Drivers as of yet I can now run the source engine with everything turned all the way up and i can even have AA on 2x I get about 50-60 FPS on non HDR maps and about 30-40 FPS on HDR maps. Still i boost it to 4x i drop to 10-15 FPS :( Keep working Nvidia Its only getting better!!

Drivers work fine for me on my 7950GX2. I just wish NV would just get SLI working cause gaming is kinda lame without full use of my card.

Thanks L_O. These drivers work perfectly on my Dell D820. 1920x1200 on my Laptop Panel and driving both of my 1907 Panels at 1280x1024 when docked. Performance is 5.9 in Aero for the Nvidia Quadro 120m. Just had to modify the INF to support the card and bang.

Work, or install great for me too with both x86 and 64 Vista, except, they have enabled AA for even more titles I play, thus performance is down the tubes since there is no Sli yet.

OpenAL is a bull****, the sound quality is not even close to DirectSound.
As far as sound, with Vista we are going one step back, maybe even two. Nothing can beat EAX 4 with 7.1 surround sound system. OpenAL is not even close to it...

ugh you did an ABX test with DirectSound and OpenAL?

If not please do it.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll give these a try if they're running great :)

Looks like the drivers 97.34 are bad for 1440x900. I can't force it to change it to that setting. 1280x1024 although I must admit I like the height of the taskbar over the 900, why isn't there something like 1440x1024 anyway hahahah. Anyway I think I might have to revert back to the other version of nvida drivers cause the texts etc are stranging my eyes I think.

Just a note - I've only just installed these, but at least in 2D, they work properly at 1680x1050 on my Dell 2007WFP, with a secondary CRT running at 1280 x 1024 at the same time. I'm not sure if that's at all interesting... but... um... it's true.

Installed on Vista X64 RC2 and they work better than the previous ones. Need for speed now has perfect graphics and the performance at 1600x1200 4xaa and 16as is around 30fps. Not perfect but playable.

Fear also has better quality but performance is still bad at 1660x1200.
I have a 7950GX2.
