AMD decided not to gave R600 UFO with DDR3 the go ahead and gave R600 Pele with DDR4 full line the go ahead for February 2007 launch.
It could be a few reasons why AMD killed R600 UFO project:
1) R600 UFO could be the first victim of consequence because AMD won't tolerate the engineers have more time to complete it.
2) R600 Pele missed the launch schedule by 1 month.
3) R600 UFO not up to par with G80.
We wont see cheaper R600 line up with DDR3 so instead we will see more expensive R600 line up with DDR4.

I'll wait to believe anything until a real news source reports this.
My guess is number 3, just a feeling i have.
This thing better be the same price as the G80 even if it might have better performance. As ATI are late to the table yet again they have plenty of catching up to do. If its priced more than the 8800gtx they wouldnt be catching up anytime soon.

Maybe all three reasons you listed, but I think #3 is likely as well.
Maybe AMD had one or the other project to cancel. Their 4x4 tech or R600? 2007 will tell if they made the right decision or not.

It could be a few reasons why AMD killed R600 UFO project:
Funny that you left out the most obvious reason - and the one alluded to in the article you linked. How about UFO was just a backup in case of limited GDDR4 supply? Assuming R600 does have an external 512-bit bus there is no way that any deficiency relative to G80 will be bandwidth based regardless of GDDR3/4 usage.

My trust in the Inq for Ati news is as much as for Nvidia news.....
Meaning 0,zilch, nada, niente
Fun to read, hard to digest, impossible to comprehend

ATi is fine. They'd got the Wii and XBOX360 bringing them in loads of cash, but as far as the desktop market is concerned, they are a complete joke. Always a day late and a dollar short.

But the important part is that your mom DID get paid.
:D
Well i don't think DDR-4 is that much more expensive then DDR-3 after all they got the X1950XTX out with faster memory and was cheaper then the X1900XTX.
