I've had it with my CRT.
It's about 7 years old I'm practically going blind looking at it everyday.

I think I'm finally going to invest in an LCD. I know the whole deal with LCDs not being fit for fast moving images (like games) because of the response time, but I can't stand my monitor anymore. I need a new one.

Any suggestions?
Thx in advance.

As long as the LCD has a solid response time and high contrast ratio, you won't miss your CRT one bit. A lot of places have recommended the Samsung 172B. It's a 17" LCD that has a lot of solid features, is excellent for gaming and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Envy News has done a lot of LCD monitor reviews so you should check the review archive there for more info.

Depeneds on your main needs and how much you want to spend. LCDs would be easy on the eyes when surfing the wed, reading that sort of thing, but can be expensive. You can get very good CRT monitors, flat sceen, with high refresh rates, and should be cheaper than LCDs. You can checkEnvy News (http://www.envynews.com/) for some LCD reviews.

As for CRTs, what size were you looking at buying?
I can reccomend Iiyama 19" Pro series or the LG E900B which is a cheaper 19", but still flat screen and does 1280*1024@85Hz, where the Iiyama VM Pro should do atleast 1280*1024@100Hz.

There are many good CRTs out there, these are the only two I use. If you are set on LCD, then maybe qlso take a look over at Tomshardware (www.tomshardware.com) for more LCD reviews.

Depends on what you use it for, I was going to go LCD but I build the occasional PC for other people and they can't be beat for office use. However, testing Samsung 15" and 17" LCDs with a P4 2.53/ GF4 TI 4200 system a couple of months ago I don't see how people can say they are good for gaming, maybe some are but not the ones I tested. Not awful but could not compare to a CRT. The other things to consider are what apps you run and how much you want to spend, I use PhotoShop a lot and prefer to run it at 1600x1200, with a 15" LCD you are stuck at 1024x768 with a 17" 1280x1024. A lot to think about when excellent 19" CRTs are under 300 dollars. I love LCDs for many reasons but the native resoluton issue, less than ideal performance in games and price made me decide to stick with my CRT for now. I will wait for under 600 dollar 19" LCDs with super fast response times, IMO coming in less than two years.

Those looking for a good LCD @ a bargain price would do well to check into the 2000FP @ dell small business.

1600x1200 native res, 25ms response time. 3 yr. warranty including backlight. When dell has sales you can sometimes get it shipped for less than $859. Tough to beat that for a 20" viewable LCD that looks excellent...

Pelly and I both have one and are pretty impressed with them.

I've been looking at that LCD. Looks pretty good.
How does it handle games and video and stuff?

Welp, if by video stuff you mean DVD it handles it just fine. I went to this LCD from a Sony GDM-F500R which is a top of the line CRT. For the money, the Dell has the Sony beat.

DVD's look just as good as they did on the Sony, but not noticeably better that I could tell.

The LCD has the Sony beat when it comes to text clarity and overall sharpness. Geometry is ofcourse a winner on the LCD vs. the Sony CRT.

Regarding games, they look and play fine to my eyes. You can still see some ghosting but it is very difficult to see and in my opinion you almost have to be looking for it. Games that are darker, like Quake3, tend to show it a little worse than say Serious Sam 2 which is a bit brighter. Regardless, it hasn't affected my accuracy. The best way to look for what little ghosting there is would be to face a wall in UT2003 and then strafe back and forth keeping an eye on the textures on the wall. You can see a little bit of a motion blur. It's slight, however.

Has anyone tried any of the Hercules Prophetview series.
They seem to be pretty good. The Prophetview 920Dvi has a response of 25 ms.

I want a LCD too!!!
I have a 17" CRT now, and I really want my eyes not to be hurt anymore.
I want to buy a 15" LCD, and I guess I'll buy the cheapest.

In my country, in the last year, our money lost much value. Before, U$S 1 == $ 1, so everything was quite cheap (maybe only 50% more than in USA). Now, U$S 1 == $ 3.2, so everything is 3x more expensive!!!

Here, 15" LCD are nearly U$S 550, so I have to pay nearly $ 1800 for one... that's too bad!!!
I'd wish I was in 2001, were the monitor may cost U$S 800, but it was only $ 800....

I'm on IBM Digital LCD. My eyes has stopped going bad... Seriously!

when i was using CTR, i had to get new eye prescription every year... but start 2 yeras ago when i got my LCD, my eye's hasn't changed one bit.

I play heavy UT2003, and i can tell you now... as long as u get digital enabled LCD (you have to have DVI port too), your going to love it!

I have yet to see any slow down or ghosting on my LCD monitor after over 2 years of it use.

I feel your pain! I'm using a 7 1/2 year old Compaq 1500 monitor. It can do a whopping 75hz on 800x600 and an even more staggering 60hz in 1024x768, its max. The Iiyama 19" I'm looking at can do 100hz in 1600x1200 I believe. A bit pricey, but I've heard good things about 'em.

Receintly I purchased a NEC 1760NX and I absolutely love it.

It's got analog and DVI inputs, 16ms responce time, thin frame, great color fidelity (for an LCD) and it's cheaper than Samsung 172T.

Check it out

If I had to make the choice, I'd prefer to buy two mid-grade 19' CRTs than one large good 19' LCD. You haven't experienced "large screen" until you've played with 2560x1024 or 3200x1280. You even get used to the gap between the monitors really fast.

A quick pricewatch check shows that you can get a pair of Viewsonic PF790s (flat-screen, 1600x1200 @ 88hz) for $600 including shipping. IMHO, that's a tough to deal to beat.

I'm sorry to hear about Argentina's economic troubles, ALobpreis, I know it's hit you guys damned hard. Good luck to you...

Whoa!
I checked out that monitor after I read your post.
17", 16ms response for $550?
Looks like we have a winner. :D

What kind of refresh rates are you people with terribly painful eyes using?! Snyper, you're problems aren't being caused by a "CRT", they're being caused by a crappy CRT. :) I still can't justify buying an lcd that has any ghosting at all. I played quake on one and tank jr. was a big puffy ball of ownage.

You should not rule out a CRT. A good 19" CRT would only put you back ~250$. And that's for a great one that would let you play your games at 1024x768@100hz easy.

It's obvious that I don't like LCDs for their cost, their ghosting, and their (previously, I'm not sure about the greatest now) low resolution/refresh stats.

You bring up a good point Cloudy.

I really don't know what refresh rate I'm running. In the Display Control panel it just says adapter default. There are several options that go up to 85 Hz. What is a good refresh rate to have it on? I have my desktop rez on 1024*768*16.

As for the LCD, I want one because I don't have that much space for a CRT. If I can find a good CRT that has a low profile I guess I can consider it. :)

Until this past weekend I had my doubts about LCDs. But after spending about 10 hours fragging the crap out of people on a machine with a Dell LCD, I really really want one! There was no noticable ghosting whatsoever, and color clarity was awesome.

As soon as I have the money, I'm ordering that NEC 1760NX display.

Look around online. If you pay $550, then you are paying at least $50-75 too much.

NewEgg and Allstarshop Online both have that model for $500.

CRT's are so much better for gaming(still) and for 3D and Photoshop editing, I bought LG F900P and man it's one sweet monitor, everyone's asking me how much I payed and where I bought it now LOL

800x600 @ 140 hz  (:p)
1024x768 @ 120HZ refresh
1200x1024 @ 100hz

1600x1200 @ 80hz and it's so much cheaper then lcd plus better looking them most ldc's actualy. Pretty big tho.

Snyper.

below 60hz is absolutely terrible. But, I like to run games beyond 100hz, while I run my desktop at 85hz. Anything 85 and up is great though in my opinion.

Hope I helped.

I use my CRT at 1024x768x32 bits @ 85 hz. Having high refresh rates just makes your sight be less tired, but the eye damage is the same.
I don't play much anyway, altough I think I will never stop (I'm 23). :D If I buy a LCD, I think I'll keep my 17" CRT for some eventual gaming. I want LCD for hours of reading and also not very-fast-paced gaming.

Because of the nature of LCD, you don't need suck a high refresh rate to get a flicker-free image. 60hz on LCD is not as bad as on a CRT.

I love my Dell FP1900 ... I would definately recommend it, but you should run it with DVI instead of analog for best performance ...

That 1900FP is a nice unit... And a bit less $$$ if you buy it from Dell vs. buying it elsewhere (ie, as samsung 191T). The 2000FP is much cheaper than the BenQ that it's based on as well.

Isn't Dell great for some of these deals they put out? I saw a deal on rage3d a few weeks ago for a 2ghz Xeon server with dual 73gig 10K RPM U320 scsi drives. For $650 shipped. A single 73gig SCSI drive of that sort costs over $450 alone! Talk about a great deal, it was almost worth buying just so you could get the scsi drives...

Dell is awesome for deal's. I picked this up for about $550 which was unbelievable.

I almost bought that server for the hard-drives, but i just can't use another computer right now ... i really should have in hindsight though.
