How about it? Since this is a new forum lets put up all the info we have on OC'ing. Tutorials, links, pics, info on how to OC A64, p4, models as well as the new conroes etc.
I'll be Overclocking my x2 3800 sometime soon and could use all the info I can find!:D :D :D :D :D

I don't want to start a new thread so I'll just ask here:
What about GPU overclocking? is there any software that I need to do that and if so where can I get it?

I added those links to my post above. nTune or RivetTuner should work on your card. nTune only works if you have a nForce MBD I believe. Otherwise with a nvidia 7 series you can use coolbits, but coolbits doesn't work with 8 series cards.

I heard and read nTune doesn't work on "multi-processor" systems - don't really understand if that includes multi-core. I've got a C2D, once "Detect optimal" is hit, wham! hard reboot. :thumbdwn:

Works fine with dual core. Don't use find optimal though, just manually increase you clocks in increments until you find a stabiltiy issue.
This thread should be stickied, lots of good info for us overclocking n00bs.

I vote for Stickie as well. It would be great to have a single thread to refer us Noobs to, rather than having 50 threads asking for the same info.
PS: any links on OC'ing specific motherboards? I used this thread when I tried OC'ing my A8v Deluxe: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=332591

dfi-street.com
provides many many guides and information regarding DFi motherboards, but it also applies to pretty much overclocking in general. I first was an overclocking noob a few years ago, and after getting my first DFI board 2 months ago, I'm very impressed with dfi-street for support, help, and highly technical information. I've got my 3800x2 at 2.75ghz 100% prime stable [16 hours at least] at 1.48v.
to the op: what exact 3800x2 do you have? mine is listed in my sig, however there were a few steppings that didnt clock so well unless extreme voltage was applied. a friend of mine got his 3800x2 for $300 quite a few months ago and he can only get it up to 2.4 or so before it fails, however he doesnt have an ideal cooling solution or an ideal motherboard to begin with. my brother and mine reaches 2.7 and 2.75ghz respectively running near 1.45v or so, using an arctic cooling freezer 64pro on dfi lanparty nf4 ultraD boards, using pc4000 memory @ 306x9 with a 5/6 divider.

Is there a program you can use to overclock your cpu thru windows instead of rebooting and going into the bios?
I know its still new, but obviously I'm interested in overclocking on the Asus P5E3 using a QX9650. Coming from AMD, I think I'm most confused about RAM and the FBS ratios. Still not 100% clear on that yet.

I really think this should be a sticky. We get a lot of threads about this very topic.

Yea I plan on overclocking when I get my intel on January, but I'm really lost on it
If for example you have RAM with 3-4-3-9 Timings, and you Overclock your Q6600 to 3.3, do you also have to change your RAM timings? Or if you're happy with them and they are good, can you just overlock your CPU to 3.3 and leave RAM alone?

depends on the motherboard. If you can run at that speed unlinked you can leave your memory at the same speed and run those timings, your nb will get pretty hot tho.

So buying RAM with 3-4-3-9 Timings would be useless unless you DON"T overclock your CPU or both CPU and RAM can run like that?
Im planning on buying a QX6950 (not 100% sure yet), ASUS Maximus Formula, and Corsair Dominator 800mhz 3-4-3-9 Timings, but this is not all sure yet, since Im planning on upgrading on January, new stuff might be out by then... but as for now, how would that work?

Well, if you are using a low clockspeed on your RAM, then you want the tight(low) timings. If you are running a high clock speed on your RAM, then you need to loosen up the timings a bit.
Even with a high clock speed you still want to use the tightest timings you can, so its still good to buy the faster RAM. I don't know about the MBD you are looking at, but with the 680i you can set the ram to be linked or unlinked with the FSB.
In linked mode the RAM clock speed goes up as you overclock the FSB/CPU, according to the FSB:RAM ratio that you select.
In unlinked mode, you can manually set the RAMs clock speed independantly of the FSB/CPU clock.
With my system, for example, I can use linked mode with a 1:1 ratio, and run my RAM at 875MHz with 4-4-4-10 1T, using a FSB of 437.5MHz(QDR1750). Or I can run unlinked, and run the RAM at whatever I want, such as 1100MHz with 5-5-5-18 2T, or 800MHz with 4-4-3-7 1T.
Here is another 680i overclocking guide, with specific info on linked and unlinked memory configs.

The motherboard I have lets you clock the RAM and CPU unlinked. I can make my RAM run at its slowest clockspeed with the tightest timings and get a stable 2.65GHz or loosen up the timings on the slowest clockspeed and get a whomping 3.0GHz on aftermarket air cooling.

That's with a 3800+. I've upgraded since then.

Woops didn't see this thread... :o Started a new thread about that article already! :D
EDIT: thought you were talking about another link I posted... Best article I've read in a long while about overclocking IMO!
