Hi guys... anybody could me help on this?
I've just installed Nero and my DVD-drive cannot operate at UDMA2 like it used to be... even when I choose to use "Ultra DMA if available" in WinXP...
anybody knows how to turn UDMA on after installing NERO? Copying files from CD is making my system struggle, taking so much CPU resources in PIO mode... any help would be appriciated... :) thanks...

hmmm... there's a CD-RW in my secondary slave channel... I have 4 drive in total... 2 HD, 1 CD-RW, 1 DVD-ROM... and I want to use them all...?!?

Same here with a CD-RW drive. Are you sure it's Nero? or is it WinXP itself? Anyway do as The Baron suggested, but it will happen again at random. Annoying at least.

well... thanks for the help guys... it works!!!
Pretty sure NERO can't do that. Every time I install nero it doesn't mess with my hardware.

It's the ASPI layer. You know, the most hellish portion of Windows. It's evil, MS has one, Nero has one, and Adaptec has one. Use the Adaptec one (find it on their site)--it's the most compatible with every program. The MS one is a complete POS. The Nero one... got me :p

Heh, I didn't even know what the hell the ASPI layer was or that it was even there until I tried to use discinfo to check the firmware on my optical drives. Had to go out to adaptec's site and load their ASPI support, worked fine after that... I kept the install files handy so if I rebuild I won't forget to replace the MS drivers.

Have to check that myself.
Or go into device manager, then IDE/ATA, then 2nd IDE controller, double click go into advanced then select use DMA if availble.

Dazz, that doesn't work. It SHOULD set it back to DMA, but it gets stuck in PIO mode. Hence why you have to remove it :p

I installed latest Adaptec's ASPI but one of my programs ceased functioning, so I uninstalled it again. So far, DMA for my CD-RW drive hasn't gone again so I will knock on wood. By the way, how do you have drives autodetection set up in bios? I have changed mine from AUTO to USER to see if that changes something.

Grrr, it happened to me again yesterday. The worst thing is not the DMA thing not working, it's just is a bad idea to use the drive until you fix it up. It can make your burnings go coasters.
