I don't want any ghosting or cruddy stuff while playing games. I want it to be the same image (maybe better from what I heard about LCD monitors with low timings) while playing games.

What are the advantages of:

CRT flatpanel vs standard CRT
flatpanel CRT vs LC flatpanel

I have $1000 to spend on it.

Thanks

Samsung LCD monitors are considered to be among the best in the biz. They all have a respnse time of 25ms or lower. It depends on what you want, bu i would say get a LCD if you can afford it.

CRT timings?

CRT timings?

25ms response rate = 40fps max
16ms response rate(currently the lowest) = 60fps max

If you are a big gamer, I would wait on getting an LCD for at least 1-2 years.

Is that the max the monitor can display even though the counter would show 800fps?

Gravioli: How come? I thought LCD monitors would be mature enough by now for big time gamers like myself?

So a CRT flatpanel is best? What bran would you guys recomend and what model?

Thanks

Good 17" LCDs with low response times: (I don't think they're making 15" screens with such response times)

Hitachi CML174SXW : 16 ms

NEC 1760NX: 16 MS

(these two use the same screens actually, NEC is cheaper)

Samsung 171N : 25 ms

I ordered an NEC 1760NX over the weekend, I'll post my impressions of it once it gets here.

This is just based off of all the latest LCD reviews I've read and the LCDs I have seen with my own eyes. No matter which LCD you buy, you are guaranteed to have some ghosting, even with the 16ms pixel-response ones. IMO, within a year or two, they will be just about perfect for gaming (higher resolutions, very fast pixel responses). I would just hold out a little longer and get a very good CRT right now. They're dirt cheap. But if you are trying to conserve electricity get an LCD now and upgrade it in a year or two.

Thanks guys. I can't wait to read your impressions nin. I am not buying anytime soon. In 3 months time I will.

Looks pretty good. I haven't seen a review for it yet. Indeed, keep us posted.

yes, you are limited by the speed the individual pixels can refresh at.

if you think 60fps is good enough for a "big time gamer." can you see the difference between 60fps and 70fps? 60fps and 100fps? 70fps and 100fps?

35fps+ is perfect for me. :)

I've heard constant 60Hz frequency on desktop can make your head ache real bad. 85-100+ should be best.

not a problem with LCDs, they work differently ;) everyone knows LCDs are better for your eyes in most cases.

but CRTs still have advantages in brightness, color, and achievable framerate

I used to drive my Sony F500R @ 60Hz all the time in 1600x1200. I didn't notice any flicker... Never got a single headache either. Poorer quality monitors seem to run worse @ 60Hz though.
