If you don't care about having a skinny cabinet on the tv then DLP is the best bang for the buck. I love our Mitsubishi 52 inch DLP's excellent picture quality.
The only negative is that it is a regular bulb DLP instead of LED which means the bulb needs replaced when it burns out. Already replaced it once after about a year and a half. The bulb is $200.

Edit: I just checked the prices of the bulbs and now it is down to $130.

Just bought a 46" Sharp Aquos 46GX3T today. It's used to replace my 2-month old Toshiba 42" LCD TV because the latter does not work very well with my PC when set to 1080p.

This new one is a bit pricey. It costs about 3 grands USD, but I couldn't be more satisfied with its performance.

So... nobody knows what will happen if I attempt to playback an HD movie (BD or HD-DVD) on an SD tv? Will it downscale the movie?

I am asking cause the tv in our living is an SD (37" Sony WEGA... er, I think it's 37"), and my monitor only supports 1680x1050. Our ancient 5-disc DVD/surround reciever is slowing starting to not play perfectly good DVDs, and a lens cleaning and disc cleansing accomplishes nothing... so I'm wanting to get a new BD/HD-DVD/DVD/Surround Reciever for the living room, but don't really want to buy a new TV yet. I have a BD/HD-DVD drive for my computer, but my monitor doesn't support 1080p. So... I'm wondering, if I were to play an HD movie on my computer that was natively 1080p, will it down scale to whatever resoultion the monitor and TV supports?

thx. :)

I heard there's a risk of instantaneous time travel if you attempt that.

No really, I've had my Blu-Ray player hooked up to a SD TV it worked just fine.

Just got done watching most of the Black Knight on my computer... meh. I'm sure it'd cause my monitor doesn't support 1080p and the image was heavily downscaled, but there was a ton of aliasing, more so than with a regular DVD. While, simultaneously, it was obviously clearer with more vivid colors. :wtf:

As to the sound quality, couldn't tell a difference, I was using headphones. :o

Will that aliasing be present when watching it on my tv in the living room? It is quite a larger screen compared to my PC monitor, would the aliasing show up more because it is a larger screen?

Well, to do so in the living room would require me purchasing a BD player to go out there, I don't know I want to do that if the images are going to look heavily aliased. Hence why I'm asking.

poor redeemed, of course it looked like crap, because you were not watching HD movie. those 9600GTs you have lack HDCP support. so no HD movies for you ;)

So how do you guys feel about DLP vs LCD vs Plasma? From what I gather, if I got a DLP I'd be best off going with and LED based one... right?

I had a 50" 1080p Samsung and I think this plasma is far better then it. The picture quality is amazing in comparison...

Really? Would you mind expanding upon that? Are the colors more vibrant? How is the picture quality better? Darker blacks than LCD and DLP?

Yeah the colors are very vibrant, far more then our DLP downstairs. The blacks are perfect from what I can tell. I am playing a PS2 game and it has ablack borders and it looks perfect... no greying at all.

I only have SD TV in my room but Blu-Ray movies and PS3 games look great, The only complaint I can find right now is on the PS2 game I am playing I am getting some motion blur but I think its the game and my PS3 causing it since no other PS2 title does it.

Wow. Looks kinda like you cranked if you crank up DV in the nVidia control panel. I like. :D

What about power consumption? Comparable to LCD and DLP? Gibs been mentioning calibration and what not... what in the world is he referring to?

|MaguS|
12-28-08, 01:19 PM
Calibrating means you run through a series of test patterns to set the color and contrast properly. I used the Aliens DVD to do mine.

Power consumption is probably the worse of the 3 technologies as is the heat it gives off. My set can get pretty warm when on for awhile.

Basically it's setting the color options and such for your TV to get the best possible picture. Check out tweaktv.com, their forum lists what they consider the best settings for a ton of TVs. Unfortunately I bought a cheap POS that's pretty much made with a defective design and they don't list mine :(

A professional calibration will adjust greyscale as well just not what is in the user menu.

The settings suggested for my TV on tweaktv.com are completely different than what I got with DVE. I haven't tried them, but by the numbers they looked to be a lot more "torch mode" than I would like. I might fire them in just to see, but I can bet I will end up going back to my own calibrated settings.

They may not be right for you. If a single set of settings worked for every single tv of a particular model the manufacturer would just set them to that before they leave the factory. When people post settings like that it's more as a suggestion, but if they look wrong they probably are.

Ah, yes, pretty much most of the time when I use the computer even though now I use wireless keyboard and mouse. I had adjusted the settings for such kind of use, and actually it's not too bad, only at the beginning I had to get used to the size of the screen, but it's not too hard to.

But of course, when I watch movies or TV, I sit about 3 meters away from it.
