I have a samsung hlp5085w and use it is my primary pc display. It is 720p and that works perfect for me. Everything is as clear as any standard lcd monitor, everything runs great because of 720p, I can max AA and in game settings in every game to compensate for the lower res so jaggies are not a problem and in fact supersampling with Nhancer is what I use most of the time which really makes it look as if it is running in a higher res.
I thought about a 1080p set and since a friend has a brand new high end 120hz Samsung I took my pc over to see what to expect.
Desktop text at 8 to 9 feet (recommended distance for 50 inch sets) was way too small at 1080p and I have perfect vision, the increase in resolution was not as obvious as one would think. We both have 50 in screens and I have heard that 1080p isnt a huge deal until you get around the 60 inch range. Honestly, the resolution increase was nothing to write home about so I stayed at 720p. I could go out and get one as I have had the cash for a while but I just dont see enough difference to justify it.
Here is my set.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HL-P5085W-Widescreen-HD-Ready-Television/dp/B0002MLXA2
You can "Adjust font size (DPI)", default scale is (96 DPI), custom can be set up to 192 pixels per inch which probably is not going to look to good at 720p monitor.
I have 1080p 37 inch monitor and would never recommend to anybody smaller resolution than 1080p specially for PC use.
Actually I would like to have even higher resolution at least for desktop use but 1080p is OK.
I sit about 2 and half feet away, some times for gaming or video watching I might be about 6 feet away on the recliner. My font size is set at 120 DPI and it's OK at that distance, no need to set it any higher.

My Samsung 32" 1080p Series 4 has 3 hdmi inputs and one slot for pc connection with 30,000:1 contrast ratio. It's just perfect for my needs especially tv viewing in which my cable provider only broadcasts sd channels. Even then the picture quality is still great which is very much better than the one on my old CRT unit. I think Samsung tv's are one of the best LCD TV (http://www.smartratings.com/electronics/plasma_and_lcds/472) as far as picture quality and budget are concerned.

I am now using a 19 inch Insignia LCD HDTV/monitor on my main pc and it is 720P res. It's ok since it's small but anything bigger than say 37 inches or so and I would have to go for 1080i at least.

I still don't have an HDTV of my own, but my brother just bought a 42" Vizio SV420M (120Hz 1080p LCD) and I have to say the picture quality is incredible when connected to a PC via HDMI.
For a $900 TV, it seems like one hell of a deal.
I was really surprised at how clear and readable the text is on a PC at 1920x1080. The backlight is also VERY even and there is hardly any bleeding at all. My friend's Samsung 26" has horrible backlight bleeding.
After seeing this thing I'm really looking forward to getting a good LCD monitor. Once LG or Dell release a 24" 1920x1200 E-IPS I'll be getting one for sure.
EDIT: I almost forgot. I did notice a fair amount of input lag when moving the mouse cursor on this screen. We just browsed the web and played Flatout: Ultimate Carnage so we didn't get into any twitch-based shooters that would make this really noticeable. I'm hoping its just related to some of the frame smoothing or noise reduction settings.
Any ideas on which settings we can adjust to reduce any input or processing lag?

Turn off any image enhancing options... and turn on gamemode if it has it.
Samsung 61" LED DLP. I just installed my new HSI 4670 1GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161273) card in and this thing plays so smooth now for both HD-DVD & Blu-Ray.

it could be some image "enchacement" but it could be simply inferior design. try turning all features off.
