Just a quick note on how it is done...

The game allows you to record your race and merge your race recordings together. Now 1000 cars is probably too many to make by yourself, and also probably too slow to run in real time. The creator most likely asked people in a forum to send in their track recordings to merge, then used either an in game, or out of game fixed frame rate to record the game one frame at a time to AVI, which produced the final result. Most or all of the tools needed are built into the game.

Those kind of TrackMania videos have been around for quite a while. That 1K one is a very stylish video and it has become a hit (over 1.6 million views @ GameTrailers!) but I think the 3K Project from 2005 has more WOW! factor in it.

The same guy who co-ordinated and rendered the "3K Project" went on to do the ultimate, the "10K Project". It was almost finished, every replay was submitted by a big group of people, but I don't know what happened because there hasn't been a video of it yet. Maybe his computer went up in flames as he tried to render the video :D

I dunno I kinda think the 1K is still better.. Better music, editing, timing, presentation. Just my opinion :)

Ohh... so it was most likely slide show theater on his computer but the video just took single frames of it and played it back smoothly?

Or did I misunderstand you?

I was think to myself "how the hell can any game or any computer have that many nice looking models on screen at once with a perfectly smooth framerate?".

EDIT: Wow that 3k video is insane. Didnt need to be that long though. They only did a few seconds of driving and just played the same clips over and over.
