updated with poll :D
I think a guy on another forum put it best.
There have to be as many games out that I want as the cost of the console.
When I picked up my $99 GC I got about $100 in games with it (Metroid Prime 1 ($20) & 2 ($50), Wind Waker ($20), Mario Sunshine ($20).
When I picked up my $150 PS2, I got God of War, Katamari Damacy, Devil May Cry, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X and FFX-2, among many, many others since then.
With the Wii, well it came with Sports, so that kind of skews it, but I also picked up Zelda, Raving Rabbids, Trauma Center and Red Steel. Only Red Steel have I sort of felt wasn't worth it.
The 360 was a gift, so that sort of skews it too. To be honest I'm not sure if I would have bought one on my own by now, but I may have. Gears of War, Oblivion, Dead Rising, Project Gotham Racing 3 are approaching the threshold. I might pick up Viva Pinata, and Lost Planet is due soon. Still, it'll take about 8 games to break the threshold of the games I want exceeding the cost of the system. But like I said, it was a gift.
The PS3...oh man. $600 = about 10 games at $60 apiece. To be honest, the only one that looks even remotely good at the moment is Resistance. Fight Night 3 looks good too, but I'd get that on the 360 if I wanted it, but I have a moral problem buying any EA games (I just don't feel right doing it). MGS4 is on the list, but it will take a lot more than that. A whole lot more. To be honest, I think I'd only buy the thing when the cost comes down to around $250-$300, and there are 5 or 6 must have exclusive games on it.

Where is the "I have cancer and need the PS3 to cure it" option?
I want one as it is now but just haven't been able to find one yet. The price doesn't matter that much to me, I just want a next-gen console that is fairly quiet.

No interest in it one bit.

Same as any console. I need must have games to justify the cost. In the case of the PS3, that's an awfully big cost to overcome.

sony would have to pay me about $600 a month to make me own a ps3, if it was a one time payment, right after receiving the money i would throw it out the window

Jebus would have to come down and command me to buy one. even then, i'd ask.. "are you sure about this?"

When gameplay is improved (ie better games are out for it...) I'll pick one up in March when it's out in Europe...

Simple, I'd buy one when I can actually find one for the regular price. Though with the current line up I am not really in any hurry, though it would be good so I can also have a BR player in my setup.
What the hell?
It's not all that it was cracked up to be, but its going to be a decent competitor for the X360 not only because of the brand name, but also because there ARE going to be fun games out for it, even if they are multisystem.
I'm disappointed too, but no no one would have to pay me to take one.

It would have to be bundled with the 360 and Wii for me. Also, it would be a cold day in hell for Blu-Ray to win.
after droppin some cash on a 360, i will not be getting a PS3. i also support HD-DVD (because i refuse to let Sony dominate a medium, all their crap is overpriced).

so far, results are pretty even throughout the poll. "Price would have to be lowered to $400" is in the lead by one vote. :p

I'd honestly buy one for $300-$400, which just so happens to be the price they could have sold it for if they didn't include Blu-Ray. The reason I am not buying the system now is probably the same reason most others have. I can easily afford it, but the reason I can afford having nice things is because I don't like to WASTE my money. PS3 = Waste of money at the moment.
The people who buy the PS3 either:
1. Had the system given to them(which by all means, more power to ya. Its still a nice system, just overpriced.)
2. Have way too much money they don't know what to do with it.
3. Are poor as hell and are just continuing with tradition of poor people buying things they CAN"T afford, thus staying poor for even longer.
Jebus would have to come down and command me to buy one. even then, i'd ask.. "are you sure about this?"
(rofl2)
I might buy one if they were cheaper, but I've already got my Wii, and I doubt that I'd be able to play two consoles + my PC enough to make another one worthwhile.
I would be willing to buy a PS3 once Sony actually finishes the beta testing on it. As it is now the PS3 is not ready for prime time!

So basically the people that own PS3s fall into the category of being "anyone."

Where do you fit in the category? Where do I?
We both can easily afford it. We are just smart enough to not do it.
People who are poor usually aren't smart enough to realize their limits in money, hence why they are poor.
People with tons of money don't care and will just buy it because it is the most expensive. Most expensive = better in their eyes. :p

Like I said before, I would sooner convert to Islam than buy a PS3 and the chances of the first choice are exactly zero.
