Yeah, I just read about that over on arstechnica. At first I thought I might've made a mistake by getting my DRU500AX. Then I realized that it will probably be a long time before blue laser DVDs become cheap and readily available. Probably at least a year, maybe even longer than that...

Not sure where you're coming from there... It's only piracy if you copy it and give it away or sell it (copies of DVD movies/games). Am I missing something? :)

Sony are a huge advocate against piracy, yet they sell cd burners and the media to continue. Now they release a mass storage device that will replace cds as backup, which are going to be used again for piracy.

Or tape recorders, or VHS, etc.. This is silliness, ofcouse they should produce these items. People that abuse them should face the consequences. Ofcourse, it usually boils down to going after the big fish. In other words, if I copy 10 movies and give them to my friends Sony and/or the Motion Picture Assocation probably don't care all that much (it's still wrong though, mind you). Now, if I copied 100 movies and SOLD them I would be a big fish in which case they would want to beer batter me and fry me up. :D
FACT BOX
Sony's Blu-ray machine will be able to play red-laser discs using the DVD-R and DVD-RW formats, but not those using the DVD-RAM or DVD+RW formats.
This I do not understand, I have a Sony DVD+RW. I'm just a bit  to see Sony not support a standard that they sell equipment for.
I know that Sony sells both formats and I believe they have a -R/+R combo burner. I'm sure with revisions and newer models they will add support.
Cheers

It'll be quite some time I'd wager before blue-ray recorders become commonplace. Probably years before they replace the current lineup of DVD writers with blue-ray. The combo drive you refer to is the DRU500A from Sony (supports -R/-RW, +R/+RW). I don't see Sony yanking the DRU500 from the market and replacing it with a blue-ray device any time soon.

no I just think vamp is trying to make the point that even though Sony strongly apposes media piracy, they still continue make devices that can be used to create and distribute such.

Thank goodness that they do... If they didn't I'm sure someone else would anyway. At least most people that do pirate things don't distribute them enmasse or sell them. Not that it makes it OK, ofcourse, but it's not as bad as burning 1000 copies of some movie and then selling it at the flea market. ;)

tru dat! W@rez are illegal enough in itself but when a person tries to make profit off them thats when you can get into real problems.
