Never really looked into this feature. For those who have, is there any reason(s) why I would want to?

If you wanted to develop for the ps3 in linux ie: for free. However rumours have it that the linux drivers for the graphics chipset are not availible.

As well you could probably load linux, buy a external DVR recorder and run myth tv. Makes for a expensive DVR but it should work.

Because you can?(xmasmile)

Otherwise not really. Like Lyme said there aren't any accelerated drivers available for the video card so about all it can do is display a web browser or something, and if that's all you want you can get a lot cheaper PCs to do it.
