Its hit a new low!

Recently some English schools have removed the book the Three Little Pigs, on the grounds that it may offend muslim students.

The council will be releasing more culturally sensitive books soon.

OMG this is getting so stupid:mad:

Hmm...in this instance, I don't find it at all disturbing the book was removed. It seems totally acceptable to me that if the majority of a kindergarten classroom is Muslim, then a book which could be offensive to them should be removed. It is the childs parents responsibility to instill in them the religious norms they want that child to have. In this case, desensetizing them would undermine the parents ability to do so.

It would be like if in Salt Lake City, kindergarteners were to read a book about coffee, caffine and coke. The faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints preches against the substances.

Prayer in school, 10 Commandments in the foyer, Pledge of Allegiance, The Three Pigs....you can't offend the godless anymore then you should offend the god-fearing.

huh

This would only be true if it were a private school. If it was a public school then the muslim would have to change to the standards of the public school or go find a private school to enroll in.

I bet if it were a Christian no one would say boo, except to say the Christians were fanatics.

I think Ray Bradbury put it best in Fahrenheit 451 when he had the chief firefighter (can't remember his name right now) say:

You must understand that our civilization is so vast that we can't have our minorities upset and stirred. Ask yourself, What do we want in this country, above all? People want to be happy, isn't that right? .... Well, aren't they? Don't we keep them moving, don't we give them fun? That's all we live for, isn't it? .... Colored people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it.

Damn I had hoped that book was just science fiction, this hits too close.

While I do feel political correctness is necessary in some instances (for instance I believe in using he/she instead of the generic he for pronouns), this goes a bit too far.

Serious instances that truly oppress people justify being talked about, but NEVER censorship. Censorship is the ultimate evil, and unfortunately we're headed that way.

Btw, did you all read about that guy in America today who was arrested for wearing a "Give Peace a Chance" t-shirt? Guess the Freedom of Speach and Right to peaceably assemble only applies when it's convenient.

Education is a RIGHT, not a privledge.

60% of a schools population has the RIGHT not to be offended or have their religious teachings circumvented by the state.

It's a childrens book for the love of god. There are thousands out there to choose from. Read them The Three Bears or some Beatrix Potter instead. And like the article said, the book would still be available in the library, its just not going to be part of the curiculum.

Hrm I can't believe a certain person in this thread is agaisnt being pc. I am however. PC is simply censorship of the mind. Pure and simple. Don't say something that could offend someone? Wtf is that? ANYTHING you say can be offensive. I could say Greenday is the worst band to walk the earth. Then some nutcase Greenday fan is gonna want to bash my head in. Awww did I offend you? To ****ing bad.

I don't remember anything in the constitution about a right to education. I could be wrong. Should it be a right? I think so but that's besides the point.

As I said, does that hold up if it is a Christian? The answer is no.
You also missed my point completely. If it is a private school they can remove the book if they so choose. Now if it is a public school why should the school remove the book because somebody says it is offensive? I never said anything abou this situation.

I havent any idea if there are private primary schools in England.
Here in the US we do and that is my point. Why should the government set up a different school for Muslim children when they would never do that for Christian children.

Everytime a Muslims get offended everyone bows down and pats them on the butt. Yet if a Christians is offended the attitude is, well they deserve it because of what they did during the Crusades.

A favorite tactic among the powers that be is to claim "sensitivity" to a minority group in question (often called "political correctness"). If they are lucky, they maybe able to find a small lunatic fringe within that minority and make it appear that this small group of lunatics represent the minority.

For instance, look for a small group of right-wing Christians who hate Halloween and wishes it to be banned and make it appear that most Christians hate Halloween. Or look for a small group of Indian Muslims who hate Valentine's Day and make it appear that most Muslims hate Valentine's Day.

This is not "political correctness", it is actually political manipulation. It causes people to end up disliking that minority group. It is a tactic used here in the States. I'm assuming the Brits know this tactic as well.

In the example that Vamp gave, name the Muslim activisit that is against "Three Little Pigs"? Kind of hard to find one, eh?

Vamp, what's wrong with you Brits? Can't the school quote a Muslim on how bad pigs are? The school itself is made up of 60% Muslim. Surely, you Brits can find one of their parents to speak up against the three little pigs.

while on the subject of political correctness, is it true that if you are mugged or something and if you report the ethnicity to the police you will go to jail for discrimination?

my friend told me some reporter wrote got arrested because he told the police he was mugged and in the description he mentioned a skin color.

Hmm...well there are 2 things that make me not like this whole pulling of the 3 pigs deally:

#1. The reason for them removing the books is based on Religion, which most people agree should be kept out of schools

#2. It's because of a certain type of animal (set in a fictional setting) that people have a problem with this, which just doesn't make any sense. Are they not allowed to read about pigs in Biology, either?

And I'm just wondering where this will stop. If someone is a member of a cult that portrays bears as unclean animals, does that mean we shouldn't teach about them in school and get rid of The Three Bears stories, too?

Now if there was a story about a Devil in a book and it was not allowed in schools, I could understand that since that's a direct compairision to a religious figure, but we're talking about an ANIMAL. It's bad enough that we're constantly boasting ourselves for being "above" animals and are so smart, when we start censoring things because a certain group has villianized a certain animal I honestly start questioning if we truly are more intelligent then they are...

Um I have to say. Mixing religion and that state in one stupid ****ing thing to do. I know just about every nation does it but it shouldn't be so. Religion is a thing of faith not entirely substantiated in the "real world" that is after all the whole point of having faith.

A belive a successful country need to be run on hard numbers and whatnot.

How's this for PC. As long as someone isn't white they can bitch. When a caucasion bitches he or she gets ignored. Gotta love the double standards of miserable minorities who claim 'equal rights.' It's turning into as long as one is a minority they're more equal than everyone else.

Thats true actually, it wasn't that he mentioned skin colour but he did it using an "official racist term"... (we have those now thanks to blair). Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan of name calling especially when you know its going to offend but is it really worth arresting someone over?

Blair, believe it or not is a cheerleader (with the excpetion of the iraq situation). So there are a lot of words that you can now be arrested for.. but they're just words

Im suprised however that its not racist to call you guys "yanks" or austrailians "ozzies".. what about them calling is pomms? None of us take offense to it, we're all grown up, its just a nickname, or a label for a difference between two humans.

I'm a great believer in trying not to offend someone when possible, but I don't believe that should be at the downfall of a countries herratage.

I remember a news story from a while back (here (http://libpub.dispatch.com/cgi-bin/documentv1?DBLIST=cd02&DOCNUM=41875) it is) about women who did not report rapes simply because their assailant was black. They were afraid that they'd be labeled as racists. Sheesh.

I'll go on record as saying PC is a load of crap. What a bunch of pansies everyone's turned out to be. Have some thick skin!

A couple of females delayed reporting possible break-ins. They weren't raped.
