lmao, there must not be much new on the rumor front, as this post is getting alot more attention then i thought. Instead of starting a new thread, ill just ask right here. I want to know everyone's opinion on whether I should pull the trigger on the 8800GTX.

Current System

AMD Opteron 170 @ 2.85GHz (280x10) 1.44v Stock Cooling
DFI Lanparty UT nF4 SLI-DR Expert
Powercolor X1900XT @ Stock :(
G.SKILL 2x1GB DDR500 @ 522MHz 3-4-4-8
FSP Epsilon FX700GLN 700w PSU +12v 60A (4x15)

I am planning on purchasing a QX6700 along w/ a DFI 680i later on.

So, yes or no? reasons for your choice would be much appreciated thx. (xmassign)

I know SH64 hates this...but if you really are getting a C2Q, wait until Q2 2007. I know it's a ways off, but I believe the Q6700 is going to be dropped down to $530!

 here we go again ..

:p
Well since the C2Q launch is not far off from now i think its ok if he wait , BUT NOT FOR LONG. at least his Opteron should do good for now.

as for his Q. to get the 8800GTX or not , i say yes get it! in some cases the 8800GTX was more than 100% faster than the XTX.

Do you mean the Q6600 2.4GHz that will go from $850 to $530? There will be no regular Q6700, just the QX6700 correct? A Q6700 @ 2.66GHz I would seriously consider, but the Q6600 not so much. From what I've read in the Kentsfield overclocking thread, the Quads don't reach the FSBs that the Duos do, not even close. The 9x multiplier on the Q6600 is too much of a risk for me, which is why i want the QX6700 w/ unlocked multiplier, as my goal would be 3.5GHz+.

I know about the Core 2 price drops, they seem nice but Q2... April, thats a bit far off for me. I was only planning on waiting until February anyway. I dont have the money for Core 2, as it would be at least $300 (E6600), $250 (680i), $300 (RAM), so $850. $1650 with the quad lol. I only have about $640 atm. Inevitably, ill be waiting so ill see what happens. Maybe ill get lucky and Intel will drop prices sooner then expected.

Graphics is the only upgrade that I'm even considering right now. An E6600 oc'ed w/ my Tuniq Tower would definitely give me a nice boost w/ an X1900. However, nowhere near the improvement I would get with the 8800 @ 1920x1200 so GTX clearly the only option.

I'd wait and see what the E4300 has to offer,a few reliable sources have talked of 100% oc's !!

As well stay away from the 680 as its plauged with problems, and grab a 650i based solution........ like say the Asus P5N-E Sli for about 140~...Its a better oc'er and is way cheaper and does not have the issues the 680 does.If SLI is not a must, grab a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 2.0 or Asus PB5-E with latest bios. I cant really see myself buying a 650i, but ill look into it. Any links to previews? Hopefully the problems will be sorted out by the time DFI releases their 680i.

The Q6600 is supposed to be out in january with a $536 price ,but I like you ,if the FSB don't overclock good ,and be stuck at a multipler of 9 would'nt be good.but if I could get 1600 then it would be fine ,I look for nvidia to come out with something new when ATI lanches there R600 unless it is a flop and nvidia still has the fastest card without haveing to come out with a new card,But they still need to come out with a $200 card.

Do you have a link that says January for the ~$530 Q6600? I'm just curious, because I'd read it was going to be Q2. Sooner the better. :)

Here are some P5N-E SLi reviews, no resualt with reguards to Quad overclocking, due to this i am thinking of the QX6700 myself but it's alot
to swallow for a chip. I am starting to think Intel did this to make people
buy the extremes more considering they have the performance lead with the core 2's!!! The E6600 is faster and cheaper then a X2 5200+ however if you overclock it's even better so if you know want to overclock you need to spend $1000

So when will the next revision of NVIDIA cards be out? My "Step-Up" runs out on March 27th :captnkill:

:udawg: You don't actually believe EVGA stands by their step up policy anymore do you? They stopped doing that months ago.

That, actually, is what I'm betting as well. I'm sure nVidia's best move with the 8900 series would be to up the GPU/Shader clocks as much as they can. Or, not touch the clocks and introduce a single slot 8800GTX. :p

There's one of these already. ;)

Nice- but I'm well aware of that card. I was thinking in terms of a single slot air cooled 8800GTX. That'd be nice.

Hey, Xion-

Is there enough room between your two cards to use the PCI slot in-between the graphics cards? Or do the tubes still get in the way?

I'm curious if with water cooling you can finally use any slot(s) in between the graphics cards.

You can use the slot inbetween. The top of the waterblock where the tubing goes in/out sticks out a little so that it doesn't get in the way. See how it does?

RussianHAXOR--the Black Pearl, although a nice looking card, isn't single-slot. That's what we were talking about.

Technically it is, granted the back plate will have to be removed but the pipes are above hight so you can slot a Xfi sound card right next to it.

I was going to get pretty pissed if g81 was released right after my step-up runs out. Its not really that big of a deal though, I could get enough money out of my GTX by selling it here on the forum, or on ebay.
