Ill admit im a newb in some areas of computers, and interfaces are one of them.

I just got my first sata HD for X-mas(YAY!!!!!) and the thought struck me,where are all the Sata Optical drives at,such as DVD burners ect.

I have the rest of my new comp ordered along with wire ties sleeves ect,i want a neat wiring job, then i think of the ugly ribbion cable for my DVD burner.

Yes i know that they make ropund IDE cable's(which i'll be getting)but why no sata drives?

Is it to expensive?some tech problem,or am i an idiot and they are all ready out?

I just bought a Lite-On one for $35 at NewEgg. That only leaves one IDE drive left, and I'll finally be IDE free! :)

I still don't see ANY reason to spend twice to three times as much on a Plextor. Just a waste of money if you ask me.

Take a look at this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827249006

PLEXTOR 16X DVDR DVD Burner With White bezel,AUTOSTRATEGY,PoweRec,10X DVD+R DL Write Black SATA Model PX-755SA - Retail $105.99

Now here is pretty much the SAME drive, only Lite-On:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106046
LITE-ON 16X DVDR DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-16A7S-06 $35.99

So is the Plextor drive worth the extra $70+tax/shipping??? Only a fool would say yes. Why buy a Plextor drive? So you can burn a DVD 3 seconds faster? Big Whoop! Their Blu-Ray drive is STILL $845, while Sony's is about $650 and Lite-On's is $599. Just because it's more expensive, doesn't make it better!

I have the samsung sata and it works great. I remember when Plextor released their first gen of SATA opticals, they had bad compatibility issues with some SB controllers. It seems as though the current generation has no problems.

Microcenter has the samsung one in their ad for $50, I've seen some people pricematch it at bestbuy. The samsung one has lightscribe and is 18x. The current lite on one is 16x and non-lightscribe but is only $35.

Here are some DVD burners with Serial ATA interface:

- Lite-On SH-16A7S
- Samsung SH-S183L
- Samsung SH-W163
- Plextor PX-760SA
- Plextor PX-755SA

And here is the link with more info:
http://sataoptical.com/category/dvd-burner/

I think the cheapest is Lite-On SH-16A7S. It can be found for around $35.

There are also some DVD readers, combo drives, and Blu-ray drives with SATA listed.

Thanks for that!

After having an enormous hassle plugging everything back in after the monstrous Galaxy 1000W PSU and 8800GTSs were installed, I found that my two NEC 3550 DVD burners were the most troublesome with their IDE cable getting in the way and being an overall pain to twist around.

I wish NEC made SATA versions of their drives because they've been phenomenal to use the last 2 years, but maybe I should get two of those Lite-Ons for $35ea and try 'em out...

Samsung has recently released their 18x Lightscribe drive in SATA. I have the IDE version of it and I love it. Not sure what model number it is, but I saw it on Newegg for around 40 bucks OEM.
