Which one should I get? I have the Gateway 21" and it has been fantastic at 1080i over component, but I am really interested in utilizing the 1080p capabilities over a vga port. The Xbox 360 HD DVD looks fetchin' sweet to me.

So which monitor is better?

or

24"......:drooling:

This is a good investment for when I build my new rig this summer.;)

Both have received great reviews, but from what I have read it seems the Dell sucks over component and the Gateway has issues when displaying a dark scene in a game or movie. Hmmm....

Haha I knew it! Slowly a new rig comes to build... :D

Till then there is Xbox Live. Selling my rig really helped pay for a ton of stuff our family needed. I'm glad I did it.

lol tiki your old XFI is screaming some Led Zeppelin into my 1000 watt soudn system right now.

And I would get the Dell. I want the 30 inch one, but i will wait till the 8ms refresh rate one is available.

14ms is too blury for me...

So what is better about the Dell compared to the Gateway, because the specs look the same to me?

Dell monitors have a great power button and adjustment button setup. Theyre right at the bottom right of the screen border.

I have a bunch of Dells at work and they rock. Plus the stand looks strong.
That gateway is definitely not bad, and is cheaper. Just depends on taste a little bit.

I voted Dell 2407, well, because I have it and I am happy :D.

Running over VGA @ 1920x1080. I tweaked the Advanced factory settings due to black levels being worse than what I would have liked, and also to reduce the washed out color effect that everyone talks about over VGA. I eventually arrived at the settings:

Offest 2 : R=100, G=100, B=100.
Gain: R=450, G=450, B=450.

Now I'm happy with the PQ and black levels. Note these only apply for VGA, not DVI.

I also recently got the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player and King Kong. Best image output I've ever seen on this monitor, bar none. I also have a couch behind the PC chair and Z-5300 speakers going through the optical out on the VGA cable, so I kind of have a mini HT setup :D.

So I can definitely recommend this monitor. Only small issue is the horizontal black lines on 1920x1080 VGA mode from the 360. To fix this, you have to manually adjust the Sharpness via the OSD to 30 every time you switch to VGA. Takes about 3-5 seconds.

Those are great suggestions thanks.:D

Does the dell have a glossy screen? I can't tell from the pictures I have seen. I used to love my Sony monitors with the glossy screen. It was a great feature IMO. Not everyone likes the gloss though I'm sure.

:)

The Dell doesnt have a glossy screen like the Sonys, but it is still pretty shiny.

Also another thing about the screen is that it cant do 1920x1080 from the 360 at 1:1 aspect ratio, as the option is blacked out on the OSD. So there are no black bars when on the dashboard etc, it takes up the whole screen. Due to this it is therefore slightly stretched, and this may be an issue for some. But personally I havent been bothered by it at all, on the contrary, I prefer this look compared to running, say, 1366x768 at 1:1 ratio.

I wish I could get used to that but it annoys me personally so I am running it at 1366x768 and using aspect ratio mode.

Tiki,
I'm about to purchase the 2485 from BestBuy. I think you would be good with either, but I decided to get the Gateway, since it's local and I can get my hands on it right away.

On a side note, I'm about to get the 22" version of the westinghouse from bestbuy since I seen it for sale and they discounted it because it was an open item at BB.

I just bought the 22" Gateway last night for $399. I cannot be any more happy with this purchase. The picture is absolutly stunning. The monitors physical appearance is very pleasing and the touch menu thingy is a really cool feature. :D The 24" has slight better specs so I can only assume it would be a great lcd. I've yet to hook my 360 up though. I have to figure out how I'm going to pull sound.

I'd imagine you can't go wrong with either though.

btw...fyi

I was posting over at rage3d and it was pointed out that all 22" are built with crap panels. TN panels I guess? I knew nothing of this so bare with me. So you may wanna check that out before spending. After digging and digging to find out what panel my gateway uses on the net, I finally found out by reading the GW user guide while on the crapper this morning. It does use a S-PVA panel. So i guess that puts to rest that ALL 22" have these panels.

TBH I really have no idea what any of it means and even if my display was using a TN panel I more then likely would have kept it. But Iknow for some people it's unacceptable. So I'm just passing the info I was passed on along to a fellow consumer.

Here's the forum that orginally sprung from the R3D threads concerning 22" models.

This is from the thread you linked:
ardForum]TN Gamers
Considered a "gamers" panel due to it's fast pixel response times which reduces trailing images know as "ghosting". However, this advantage has been reduced by new technologies to accelerate pixel response times in other panel types. Colors and contrast tend to be weak and blacks are not truly dark. Viewing angles are significantly limited. However, monitors based on this technology tend to be inexpensive.
I already got the 20.1" version of this, and the reason why I'm going to this one is because I want the composite inputs. Another reason is because it's an open item at BB and they discount them. I'll probably trade it in for the Gateway FPD2485W in a few weeks.

Yea, like I said, some people tend to be anal. It wouldn't have bothered me one way or another with my GW, the picture is gorgous. I have no idea what the Westy has but just thought I'd spread the info on. (cheers)
