Hi. Yesterday I was surfing the net and realized that my computer was extremely sluggish. I was listening to music and everything and then all of a sudden my computer got really slow, my mouse was very unresponsive and at one point my music even sped up all of a sudden, with the high-pitched sound. I thought it was characteristic of a virus and ran a virus scanner but it found nothing. I also ran adaware and it found nothing important. Even so, my computer was still really slow, so I used system restore and restored it to the night before. That didn't work, so I restored it even further. Now the computer's a lot better, but it's still slower than usual, and if I watch the performance tab under the windows task manager the CPU usage jumps up to 70-90% every nine seconds or so, very periodically. Here's the logfile from Hijackthis:

Any ideas?

P.S. I also have another problem that I haven't been able to solve. On some websites, when I use Firefox, when there's any audio, it only plays like 5 seconds of it and then just loops it over and over, even if the clip is a lot longer. In internet explorer it plays fine. I thought this had to do with quicktime, but I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled it and it didn't fix it.

what process is making it jump up?

Dazz
12-28-06, 12:44 PM
Yeah us Task Manager to find out the process or processes using ALOT of CPU usage.

How do you see which process is taking a lot of the cpu resources? The task manager only shows which ones are using a lot of memory, and none of them were using a particularly high amount. I was hoping you guys could identify some processes in that list above that shouldn't be running.

in taskmanager, view -> select columns.

oh ok, yeah that column's been there the whole time but I always kind of just glanced over it. Right now the System Idle Process has about 98, but it oscillates between 70 and 98, and other processes randomly consume the CPU with 02, 03 amounts. But, when I took a screenshot when the processor hit 91%, it said vsmon.exe had 71, PPActiveDetection.exe had 14, and System Idle Process had another 10, followed by 02 for firefox.exe, 02 for ca.exe, and 02 for System. So it seems like the big culprits are vsmon.exe, PPActiveDetection (it's part of the Computer Associates Internet Security suite...the PP stands for pest patrol, and it's basically actively watching for adware/spyware), and System Idle Process. When the system is at like 2% CPU usage, System idle process has 98 or so, but at like 90% cpu usage, the vsmon.exe has the most. Also, another thing that makes me curious, before I had this problem, my CPU was almost always at 0% usage, except when I had a lot of programs running or I just started up a program. Now my CPU usage never goes below like 5%.

well, you do have a lot of stuff running around.

Also, using task manager is a crude way to filter.. A trojan can name itself something very similar or exactly what you'd expect to be running.

Looks like your personally firewall/protection stuff is for some reason being more active than usual. Maybe all those auto updaters are trying to run.

Start here..http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/

If needed just google every process running. If something shady is there you'll identify it.

If needed, go to start>run>msconfig and uncheck one item at a time, reboot and see if the behavior persists. When it stops you know you have it.

Any ideas?

If this was my computer i'd delete all the stuff in bold and probably more, do a backup first though. You have so much etrust crap running i'd probably take that off too, you seem pretty paranoid.
I have around 20 entries in hijack compared to your 100 or so.

That looks a lot better, how much ram do you have anyway?
The R0, O2 can be deleted, also the O8, O9 stuff unless you actually use those buttons. The audio problem is wierd, which versino of ff are you using?

I've got 1 GB of PC3200 DDR memory. My firefox version is 1.5.0.9. But I've had this problem since like firefox 1.5.0.0. It's been there for a while. Like I said, everything works fine in internet explorer, and it also works fine in opera. I looked it up and posted in forums before. The people who responded said they've heard of it before and that they hadn't heard of a fix.

What do the R0 and O2 things do? and the export to microsoft excel thing? is that ever useful?

Oh yeah, and if I delete things with hijackthis, does it actually delete them, or does it just disable them?

shabby
12-29-06, 01:38 PM
Hijack deletes them. The R0 is your home page i believe, the O2 i dont know. But i disabled both and acrobat and java still work. Export anything to microsoft is never useful, just delete it. Unless you know what the file does in hijack and use it, then delete it because its simply using up memory.

Maybe the sound problem is related to a codec you have installed? Try reinstalling your sound drivers.

FYI...Technically you can never really delete ALL of AOL's junk off your computer unless you reformat.

Ya it doesnt actually delete the files just the entries, i thought thats what he was asking. If you wanna delete the file then just find it and delete it.

I already did reinstall my sound drivers, because I just got a new sound card. So it's not that. Is there a way to make firefox use windows media player or media player classic or something else instead of quicktime?
