A friend of mine asked me this and I have no idea so ill ask those that I am sure do...

"anyone managed to stream media via the xbox360 from a 2003 server?

i really don't want to build a XP media center edtion pc just for that purpose.

all of M$ documentation says that I need XP Sp2 or WXP MCE
but there must be a way to stream from a 2003 server.

I am starting to collect hardware for a MCE box but I am not quite ready for it yet, I have the case already but I am waiting for cablecard availability as well as video cards that can properly deal with HDMI and the potential encryption issues to be resolved."

doesn't stream, it transcodes

transcoding is encoding files on th fly, which not only will lower the quality, but you will need quite a strong pc if you want to transcode high quality files(720P).

forget about even trying to transcode (1080p)

My Core2 can transcode 720p .TS files easy :)

still quality is decreased

and he probably doesn't have core 2 duo server.

I'm really disapointed that 360 can only play WMV, is a good thing i kept that xbox wth XBMC

sorry, but that idea falls apart on step 1, link to WMP11. WMP11 won't install on 2003 server

i'm also quite sure server 2003 (32bit and 64bit) doesn't have UPNP host and Windows media sharing service.

well at least 64bit version doesn't, haven't check 32bit version

Then, Unfortunately, you cannot stream from windows 2003 server to the xbox 360 due to the lack of availably of those items.
