The thing is, once you take away the spammers ability to post links.. They just start copying/pasting and posting large amounts of data to the forum instead..
It would take more bandwidth to send entire contents of a page than it would to send a link.
Well, this makes them stick out like a sore thumb, and become easily identified as spammers. Otherwise they'll merely use this forum as their personal means of increasing their page rank by using subtle (http://www.google.com/technology/) links.
Hint: I inserted a link into this post, and your average onlooker won't notice it.
If this keeps up, eventually google will start delisting our forum from their search results, like they have done with other forums.
