Which is the best software DVD player?

Since you have a retail ATI Radeon 8500, the best player is the ATI one. You can upgrade to the latest version, provided you have the key from your original CD.

If not, the next best one (and the best overall for NVIDIA cards) is PowerDVD XP.

I don't have the ATI Radeon 8500. I have the ATI Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO. They are totally different cards.

Whoops...missed that completely. ;)

In any case, ATI's own DVD player should still work. As I said, you can download and install the latest update as long as you have your original product ID from the CD that came with your card.

I myself prefer WinDVD Platinum.

I have the PowerDVD Pro version because it directly supports my 4.1 speakers.

Does PowerDVD XP (non-pro version) support them as well? Cause I have that too.

I can't find ATI DVD on their website. Does anyone know where it is?

From a review I read awhile back, the results were,

NVDVD - Best image quality
then WinDVD followed by PowerDVD
