View Full Version : Did MS do us a favor by holding off on HDMI?

I was reading an article about HDMI, and one of the things it went over was the differences between the different versions, and what they are capable of. It also said something about trying to hold off a bit becuase 1.3 is the way to go, and there is not a lot of hardware out there that supports 1.3 yet.

So that makes me wonder, if they tried to get HDMI in the original 360, what version would it have been? I mean if by waiting they get to put in a better implementation of the interface, isn't that a good thing rather than trying to get it included @ launch with HDMI 1.0 or 1.2?

It would've been 1.1 or 1.2.

I don't know any details of what they are planning on doing with the 360.2, but would you rather have waited to get one with HDMI 1.3, or had HDMI @ launch?

what version does the PS3 use? I will probably find the answer myself before I get an answer here...

yep, it uses 1.3, and the place where I finally found the answer said that waiting to use 1.3 may have added to the delay in its release.

2007 is the year of HDMI 2.0. HDMI is a way for CE's to talk you into upgrading your equipment every time they make a revision. My Sony TV version is 1.2a. lol

The nonsense will not end. HDMI is the worst consumer electronics interface ever designed.

so meaning what?
What will the 360 use?
What does 2.0 bring to the table?

the only think i like about DVI is its ability to easily convert to DVI. i thought about returning my 360 for an HDMI version, but its a hassle and really not worth it. my 360 looks beautiful with my VGA cable.

I agree. HDMI has confused people as well as DVI. People get so confused with DVI-A (most worthless connection ever IMO), DVI-I and DVI-D.

HDMI was created for the average everyday electronics noob! Give me a DVI-D connection and an optical audio out and I'm a happy camper!

The hardware interface is the same, right? Wouldn't an upgrade just be a matter of firmware update?

No. That's the brilliance of HDMI. The actual chipset changes, not just some firmware.

This is almost as good as releasing a proprietary media format every time you put out a new platform.

Thank God Sony isnt the driving force behind HDMI, else itd have been driven to the ground a year ago. Though, evilchris, I think youd rather prefer that. :p

I'm going to tattoo a big Sony logo on someone I hate. Right on their forehead.

Then I'm going to chain them to evilchris's front door.

Will they have Full HD and BD support built in?

I think Full HD is now 1440p. When you buy a Sony Full HD device, it is only valid for 1 year.
