What board were you running before and why did you decide to switch?

he was running a p5b deluxe and he needs SLI.

I know the whole story :p

^ Yep. I would stick w/ the P5B Deluxe if I didn't need that second slot because it's probably been the best motherboard I've ever owned. Stable and overclocks like a motha.

I also had an eVGA 680i before that I was very unhappy with. Southbridge overheated unlike anything I've ever seen and ended up frying (idled at 80C).

Yeah I thought you had a 680i which is why I was wondering... Thanks for the update :)

I probably shouldn't be doing this, but since I've been out of Core2 loop for a while I'm doing some research to catch up on everything... just in case I have to upgrade for a game this summer. :o

I don't plan on ever going with SLI (I don't like it and it isnt cost effective for me) but I am a little concerned about the whole HavokFX thing if that ever pans out and I'd feel pretty left out if I had a good motherboard with only one PCI-E slot and no way to use a second card for physics (again, if it ever happens). I have a 6200 PCI-E and its not hard to get other more powerful cards on the cheap if HavokFX turns out to really be worth it.

I do plan to overclock and I may consider a quad core if they ever release a "low" end model (Q6300 or Q6400). So the board has to be flexible.

Right now, I'm thinking about going on the "cheap". Like after the Intel prices drop, maybe grabbing an E6420, 2gb of DDR2-800 (not too worried about the latency, so I'll just get a mid range model) and an Asus P5B or a P5N-E. That'd run me around $400. I have a feeling this would get me quite a huge performance increase in CPU limited games.

I'll wait to see how things turn out with the upcoming games, but to be honest I'm not all that happy with the CPU power I've got now in current games. Its anoying to see just how CPU limited so many games are. Any time you can change your graphics settings and get no performance increase then its most likely a CPU limitation. I'm definitely a framerate wh0re, so things like this drive me nuts.

650i delivered was toast, so back to the 680i again...

I swear, I think I've gone through more motherboards than Asus, Inc.

Bench-testing BFG Tech 680i right now, and everything looks good so far. Southbridge "only" at 50C w/ linkboost enabled, compared to the eVGA I had which was 75-80C.

Asus P5B Deluxe is 115, Will I be able to use my TT Sonic Tower with that mobo or do the heatpipes get in the way?

^ There's about 2.5-3" between the heatpipes and the socket, so I would think you should be ok w/ most air-coolers. Might want to measure, though.

If you are wanting good overclocking ,I would go with the ASUS 650i SLI ,I had no problems reaching 2000 on the CPU FSB ,with my Evga 680i SLI the farthest I could go was 1700 ,1650 stable. The Asus 650i SLI was stable at 2000 or 500 .

Well, I'm sure not all 650i's are defective; I think I just got a bad one. My comment about going through so many mobos was just due to my random bad luck w/ them lately. I had an nForce 4 that died on me right before I upgraded to my eVGA 680i. And the eVGA board overheated on the southbridge like crazy and eventually died.

OK lets say I go for the Asus P5N-E SLI, Should I put any extra heatsinks on it and where? Mosfets and the like, And where shouldn't I bother. I like to put heatsinks on things.

This board is good. According to Anandtech, the x8 pcie slots dont bottleneck dual 8800GTX'S in sli.

I know it seems like I want to be spoon fed information
to form my own idiots guide to building a pc but thats only because its troll ,erm.. true

So with that in mind ,Is it really worth getting top quality ram in my new rig? I dont want to spend an extra 100 for 3fps or 5 seconds less encoding time.

To illustrate what a cheapskate I am , My Kingston Valuram is heatsinked with aluminium sinks (not spreaders) which are cooled by a tilted 90mm fan joined to the optical drive bay by Meccano.

I just want something I can play Crysis on(that isn't a 360).

Yeah. Apparently if you up the res though, it starts to make a difference.

And you have to wonder if it'll make a difference in the future when some games come out that really start to push the hardware.

Its funny you should bring this up as it was my final thought last night, CHEAPEST 2x 16x mobo, Im off for a search. ok The P5N32-E SLI seems like the one to go for Though it is pushing my budget to its absolute limit.

I hope i get a aproved for a loan for the QX6700 2GB PC6400 dominator and ASUS P5N32-E SLI PLUS, can't seem to find the diffrence from the P5N32-E SLI & the P5N32-E SLI PLUS. The Plus version is around 30 cheaper however well priced and far lower then other 16x 680i boards. I really really really want quad, now i have seen the frame rate diffrences from 1 to 4 cores in Supreme commander it's unbeliveable!!!!!!

can you find cheaper than this?

And today I see this "Deluxe" version
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=304093&source=froogle
(16gb memory capacity??!!! according to the listed specs 4x4gb sticks??)
Now im confused????
ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe isn't core2 just noticed that.
the "premium" version has 3 x pci-e slots 8/16/16 I think I want that one.
