Decided to check up on this because I was getting tired of not being to safely play on FF servers.

ErikJ says:
We have a fix that is in beta that we'd like to get released this week.

I just got my 8800 recently and I've been itching to play through Half-Life again, but this is holding me off. For some reason Dark Messiah doesn't seem to be afflicted as badly as other source games I've tried. The bug is definitly there, but it doesn't offset the brightness on actors and props as bad as in Half-Life 2... at least so far as I've gone.

I've been playing quite a bit of CS:S lately and haven't noticed this problem. Nor do I notice it with HL2:EP1 or with DMMGC. But, with HL it is extremely noticable. So much so I can't even play the game as the emmersion factor is completely killed.

It sure would be nice for the fix to be out soon. Would be nice.

Its not all the maps, just dust. Underpass is completely fogged up, the only way I can see people is by their shadows.

A beta for the Source Engine has been released. To start a beta server,
run hldsupdatetool with the command "-beta scrmp0104". Current clients
are compatible on a beta server, and beta clients are able to play on
current public servers. Changes for this beta include:

- Cheat protected many more cvars
- Replaced cl_interp with cl_interp_ratio. Server can limit it with
sv_min_cl_interp_ratio and sv_max_cl_interp_ratio
- Added sv_rcon_log to allow rcon logging to be disabled

We plan to release this next week, please provide feedback promptly.

Thanks,
Jason

This beta is also available on the client side by running Steam with the
same beta command, please feel free to test it also.

It seems to fix the fog bug partially, still appears on long range objects.

Just tried it and it does just seem to have increased the rang at which it happens. To see it really well go to T spawn on de_prodigy and look at the roof and train cars, then walk backwards towards CT spawn.

It was a typo from the start, they changed it to:

"-beta srcmp0104"

Source MultiPlayer 104

All Valve did was increase the fogging distance to twice what it used to be....it's a temporary fix......and not good enough!

The only workaround at the moment is to run with the command line -dxlevel 81 ..... which unfortunately also disables HDR.
