6800ultra freeze ups+wierd sounds

i gave my old comp to my cousin,and after format etc.. he seems to be getting alot of freeze ups+a wierd sound when playing battlefield 2142 and even in the create character screen in oblivion,the sound made when the game froze up was identical in both games,the freeze + wierd sound can last betwen 1-5 secs,any ideas?

Have you checked it's temps recently? The fan may need to be cleaned.

If I remember correctly, mine would idle at 48-50*C, and load temps were about 70*C.

I think as long as it doesn't get over 80 "maybe" 85 it should be okay on that end of it. Have him take the side case off and the next time it locks up have him look to see if the fan is still running on the card. If the fan is going out then I could see why he would having trouble.

just noticed i posted this in the wrong section,sorry about that,the card seems to be running at 89 degrees max load,it helped to clean the fan,the freeze ups arent that frequent anymore,but they still happen,looks like 2 fins on the fan are bent,so i might need to replace the fan,any suggestions?

I dont know for sure, but i think the NV Silencer 5 would be a good choice. Unfortunately, its out of stock @ newegg right now. Heres a link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835186133) though.
