View Full Version : How far can an Athlon x2 4800+ usually go?
I will be getting a used athlon x2 4800+ CPU and I am just curious as to how high an overclock can usually be achieved by this CPU (on air)?
Also i am a bit worried that because i am getting a used one the guy might just be getting rid of it cause of a bad stepping... Is there really such thing as a 'bad' stepping as such? He even told me that to OC to 'around' 2.6GHz he had to up the vcore to 1.45 'or' 1.47 (he could'nt remember...) What does this say about it's overclocking potential? I would like to OC to at least 2.8GHz but is it risky going for this CPU or will it definately reach 2.8 no matter what stepping it has?
I would appreciate replies soon as i am supposed to be buying on friday.
Thanks.

Overclocking potential also depends on your ram, motherboard, psu.
You can put a cpu into one computer and only get 200mhz overclock. Put the exact same cpu into another computer and get 500mhz overclock easy.
As far as what is safe for that cpu I wouldn't know.

My 4800+ hit at wall at 2.8GHz with water cooling.
No what I mean to say really is if this CPU im getting doesnt have a 'good' stepping will it still reach a decent OC, or be something drastic like not go above 2.6?? Nothin to do with mobo, ram etc.

From my own viewpoint, the 4800's don't OC all that well. I have two friends that bought them and couldn't get them past 2.7gHz w/ a good aftermarket cooler.
2.75 was the most I got outta mine (lee63)

I go 2.6GHZ on my X2 4200+ on air.

AM2 CPUs should be a bit better.
....I see most of you reach/reached at least 2.6 without very high volts (whats the stock volts by the way?)... This guy had to have 1.47vcore on the CPU he's sellin me to get stable at around 2.6GHz and he had that on a better motherboard than me... Im hoping he just doesnt know how to OC, but that unlikely.. Plz someone tell me if needing 1.47 vcore to get to 2.6 on a 4800 is normal for an average stepping. ?? I want to reach at least equal to my 3700's speed (2.72) with this 4800!!!
I will be buying from him soon so plz advice quickly!!! ...although i don't think i have a choice cause the deal is agreed on...
thanks so far by the way.

I had a X2 4400+ that did 2.84GHz on air. Awhile back I saw quite a few folks have luck with later revisions of the X2 3800s, getting many to 3.0GHz on air.
I'd be careful with some of the AM2 X2s. I mean do not get the "low voltage" ones, they are notorious for mediocre OCs.
Right well i got my 4800 today and it has a CCBWE stepping. Is that good??

Hi newb here. i am a little off topic but i was wondering if rHyO would like to sell his old AMD CPU...i have 3 mobo's that all take AMD cpu's (socket462) to a maximum size of a 3200+ Sempron. CPU's are a little tough too find, if anyone has cpu's to sell pls advise me, i need a minimum of athlon XP 1800+. That i s what i use in my rig but my son has a similar setup with a crappy cpu. BTW good luck OC'ing and thanks in advance. PS...how does a person get there system specs to show on every thread?

Put your system specs in your signature.

Sorry man but i will be keeping my old one, so i can eventually use in a second system, but if i ever change my mind i will let you know. I'm sure there are plenty of ppl looking to sell CPU's in that range though.
Anyway so could someone tell me if CCBWE is a good/bad stepping for a 939 x2 4800??

I wouldn't know right off and here's a decent place to ask:

I can get 2.66GHz out of my 4400+ can do 2.75GHz but it's not 100% stable it's 3D Mark stable but thats about it.
Well im doing okay with it actually, after checking up the stepping it's meant to be good, but now it's heat thats holding me back from going any further than 2.5GHz! :( 30C idle / 53C load @ only 1GHz from stock!? Why such a nice idle temp with a huge jump to mid fifties load!? I want to OC more but i can't :(
You might need to reseat your hsf with a jump in temp like that. Mine (4400) rarely goes above 34c @10x250, just a hair above stock voltage. Make sure your not using too much t.i.m. It will act as an insulator, keep your proc hot.
Edit: What kind of cooling are you using?
Hi. Em im reluctant to say it's bad seating of the hsf cause i was having pretty much similar temp jumps when i had it seated on my 3700, surely i couldnt go wrong twice?? Dont know though.. Idling 23C now.... 52 load....
This time i used Arctic Silver 5, i am actually worried i may have put too much on.. My hsf is a Zalman 7000B AlCu. I also have an AC Freezer 64 pro lying around, never used it...
I think i might just buy a Zalman 9700 for a riduclous price cause im fed up of this...

It could be bad seating. I have never seen a temperature jump like that with any cpu I had. Granted I haven't used the 4800+
Go here http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_route_step2amdas5.html
and read how much AS5 you actually apply to the cpu. It is so little that a normal tube could probably do at least 100 cpu's. If you apply more the AS5 becomes an insulator. If you gooped it on and smeared it over the cpu that could explain the huge jumps in temperatures.
Yeah i used that guide. I put only a small bit more than the example there. Anyway i have decided to get a Tuniq Tower 120 cause that will solve all these temp problems once and for all :) It's a monster and thats just what i need!
