Black Box = for PC gamers who have played HL2 & EP1 == 40 bucks.
Orange Box = for PC/360/PS3 gamers who want everything == 60 bucks.

Since being revealed last year, fans have been eager to get a hold of Valve's Half-Life 2: Episode Two, which includes the games Portal and Team Fortress 2. When gamers race to the store in late summer for Episode Two, they'll be faced with two choices. Both Black Box and Orange Box editions will be made available, each with slightly different content.

The Black Box is only available on PC and includes Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2. It retails for $39.99.

The Orange Box is available for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and includes Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episodes One and Two, Portal and Team Fortress. It retails for a modest $59.99.

In other words, The Black Box edition is for PC gamers who already have Half-Life 2 and it's first Episode. The Orange Box is meant for everyone else, so that they can experience the full breadth of the Half-Life 2 saga.

Pretty good value for the orange box I'd say. No release date I see though.

the decision to pick the box colors delayed the game by 2 months for valve.

LOL and so much for episodic content coming out more often and being cheaper for gamers. See why I rip on gabe newell?

Well whatevever the case, the game is at least a good six to twelve months away according to valve time (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time).

Yeah I agree, episodic content is pretty stupid when you charge normal price for the next episode and release the next episode a year down the line from the first.

That said, the orange box does sound like a good value.

I'm going to wait until EP3 comes out so I can get whole for 360. :) And PC too maybe.

It's sad but true.... What cheers me up is thinking about those first HL1 screenshots that were released before the game came out, the ones where Gordon looks like a viking. Because of the negative feedback, Valve decided to delay the game and it came to be the critically acclaimed Half-Life.

I'll just get E2 off steam for $20, just as I got E1.

Overpriced? Well, E1 was not overpriced at all. It was well worth the $20 I paid for it.

HL2 started to become more of "Hey look what our engine can do" than the story, but I still enjoyed playing it.

I don't think thats the case at all... heck if anything I think the story has become stronger then it was from the start. I think HL2:EP1 has a far better story then the original HL2.

I'm torn on if I should get EP2 on the PC via steam or on the 360.

I paid $8 for it only two weeks after it came out. The retail stores put new releases on sale often, especially when there is an upcoming holiday. You don't ever get this on steam.

i got mine EP1, for about 10 bucks, thats about right price for episode, anything above that is overpriced.

I think I'm gonna go with the black box, ep 1 and 2 since I don't have them on PC yet. Unless the PS3 version has a good amount of extras I don't have a need for it.

The Orange Box seems like a good deal at first...but from the sound of it, it doesn't include CS:S, and I wouldn't count on it having HL2: DM or HLDM:S. It really seems like they're mixing up their content too much, different packages including different things, and meanwhile forcing you to buy other things in a bundle. Of course if they do release them separately on Steam, they'd probably each be $20...

I'll wait until the Black Box goes down a bit in price before I pick it up probably (since I already own HL2 and Episode 1). Episode 1 wasn't bad for $8, but I wouldn't pay much more than that for an episode alone, and TF2/Portal aren't enough for me to go for the $40 price tag. They'll probably come out with some Gold Box version later anyway which includes HL2, Ep1, Ep2, TF2, Portal, CS:S, DoD:S, HL:S, and HLDM:S.
