I was thinking about getting a Kentsfield & 2GB more RAM. Would this be a good move or should I wait to upgrade CPU/MEM/MB in November with the new Intel Quads coming out? Anyone know how the new Quads compare in benchmarks compared to the Kensfield's?
If it's not a large margin I'd rather scratch my upgrade bug asap :p

I'd wait for Yorkfield (Extreme Edition this November).

Are there any benchmark comparisons yet? I don't know if I'll have 1G to drop on that puppy either :( doh

Clock for Clock Yorkfield is around 8-11% faster. But you'll get SSE4 and better OC headroom in addition. Imo it's worth it!

Sweet OC and nice temps.
Mobo? and cooling? air or water? :D

I think setting my NB Voltage to 1.43 insured my PCIx16 link width wouldn't reset to 1x. :)

hey.. i have a q6700 @ 2.6 and i want to hit 3.2ghz on it, im using/stock fan and the mobo its a msi p6n diamond
how ever knows what settings i need plz speak now :(
i also have a e2140 1.6ghz OC @ 2.9ghz thats as much as i can get for now (i dont really know much about overclocking) i wanna hit 3.2ghz in it too, that one has stock fan and a msi p6n sli mobo.
can you ppl tell what to put in the bios to achieve my goal.. plz pl zplz
Basically with your Q6700, you should have a 9x multiplier option available.
So take 3.2ghz (3200) / 9 = 355 (or 356 if you round it)
I'm using the default vcore so it's still on "auto" and 3ghz is stable. I could possibly even lower the vcore, but haven't spent that much time with it.
The main thing, however, is that all hardware is different. You could have bad RAM, but a great OCing mobo and CPU, or have great RAM, but a FSB-limited mobo, so you just have to make sure all the pieces work together well.
When I built this PC, I bought some "slower" DDR2 667 RAM, but the thing is, it usually did better than most DDR2800 RAM and was more trust-worthy. Not only that, but it was the 10th anniversary Crucial RAM, so I got some "purty" blue heatspreaders as well with the RAM. :)

Tuniq Tower :)
I can get mine to 3.6GHz but only for quick benchmarking :( lol. Here's my settings for stable 3.42GHz:
ASUS P5B-Deluxe
AI Tuning - Manual
CPU Frequency - 380
DRAM Frequency - DDR2 - 950 MHz
PCI Express Frequency - 100
PCI Clock Synchronization Mode - 33.33 MHz
Spread Spectrum - Disabled
Memory Voltage - 2.25V
CPU VCore Voltage - 1.45V
FSB Termination Voltage - 1.3V
NV VCore - 1.55V
SB Vcore - 1.50V
ICH Chipset Voltage - Auto
MRS - Disabled
CIE - DIsabled
Max - Disabled
V - Enabled
CPU- Enabled
Ex- Enabled
PECF- Disabled
Intel Speedstep - Disabled
Anything I could change to get 3.6 stable? I think I've pretty much tried everything though

Tuniq Tower :)
wow... in that case I find those temps highly unlikely, especially with the raised voltage.
My Q6600 G0 at stock is warmer than that, and im using a ultra 120 extreme which is a slightly better heatsink than the tuniq tower. Can you do me a fav and check your temps with both speed fan and intel TAT and report back.
GitDat:
I too was aiming for 3.6 i am able to get into windows as you are as well i imagine and start stress testing in orthos but it gave a calc error :(
I did get it stable as a rock at 1.55v however. But then it got too hot and the computer restarted :(
I think whats necessary is to do the vdroop pencil trick to get your vcore voltages more stable then we can use lower voltages but be stable.

I have a Quad Core G0 Q6600 and would like some help just doing some minor overclocking:
Heres the setup
Q6600 G0
OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) (PC2 6400)
Gigabyte GA-P35
Zalman Fan , idle at 44c 1300 RPM
Im new to the overclock, but essentially would like to see 3.0 GHz,
where should I start bumping stats up first?
EDIT:
I flipped through some guides, do some of the rules apply, apply for the newer stuff?
Should I lower memory frequencys first?
Lock PCI frequency clocks?
????? :O

Yes lock those frequencies, run two instances of Orthos first and post up your load temps.
You'll have to change the affinity in the task manager to make it load all four cores.
MAX temp for this CPU is 71*C
If the temp is in reason I would just set the FSB to 333 and the ram to 666Mhz and reboot, dont even touch Vcore yet. If it doesnt post or BSODs in Windows then bump the Vcore a little at a time until it does. It should go with no more than 1.4v.

Thanks for the help...
but with my motherboard i cant really change the memory settings
and i change the FSB to 355x9, but when i go in windows it shows in CPU-Z
FSB=266x9 @ 2.4...
????
It just keeps going back to default settings :(

When in the bios you have to hit Ctrl+F1 to get into mit which will give you more options for overclocking. I don't think it's in your manual.

These readings look more normal. The original reading didn't show all of the cores, which were warmer than the CPU reading. I honestly don't know why it was so cool on my first test. Here is where they stand now, same OC on air. My mobo seems to like changing the voltages... these are at idle, though in BIOS it is set at 1.48.

Hmmm temps seem abit more realistic, but its weird how speedfan has the cpu temp totally wrong.
Can you run this and report back what temps it shows.
http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138139-intel-tat.html
Curious to see if they match.
Fantastic result you have either way.. if those temps are legit that is very cool!!

I do have 5 fans inside my box in addition to the cpu cooler... it's running solid, though I haven't stress tested orthos. Just the Crysis demo and a bunch of 3dmarks last night. ;)
I have TAT already, but have never gotten it to work in x64 vista. If anyone has a fix I'm all ears.

mmmmm I guess my temps are a fair bit higher as ai have 9 HDDs pumping alot of heat.
Well my hat comes off to you sir .. wicked temps :)
What are they (the temps) in bios?
