if you are ok with the idea that one day you won't be able to playback those HD-DVD, then go ahead and buy them, save quite a bit of cash.
remember you can always convert those HD-DVD to BD, you would loose the fancy menus, and extra, but movie video and sound will be intact.
But what would prevent me from playing back HD-DVDs? If it is software, I'm certain that support wont fade till Windows 7 successor. Which gives me at least about 4 years to enjoy. At which point I could easily convert them to BD as you've stated.
