View Full Version : SLI overclock made no difference

I have 2 7800GTX cards that I am playing with, but I have a small problem that I need help with. These are my 3Dmark06 scores with different configurations.

Single 7800GTX 430/1200 (default) 3Dmark06 = 4029
Single 7800GTX 516/1270 (auto detected) 3Dmark06 = 4506

SLI 7800GTX 430/1200 (default) 3Dmark06 = 6319
SLI 7800GTX 516/1270 (from above) 3Dmark06 = 6304

For some reason the cards will not go any faster in SLI mode no matter what overclock settings I put in. The cards are from Dell machines (huge heatsinks) and so I was quite surprised to see that both cards overclock quite nicely while on their own but I can't find out why they won't in SLI.
If anyone can shed any light as to why, I would be very thankful.

Cheers

wot system do you have i got 8200 in 3dmark06 with 7800 sli standard clock but x2 4800 at 2640 mem 264 2gb

single card standard (7800gtx) standard system got 4300 on a x3800 amd2x

drivers are 91.47 for 7800 gtx

The CPU is a single core 4000+ overclocked at 2816MHz (256x11), my CPU score in 3Dmark2006 is only 1120 and so thiat is why this will be my next upgrade.

When running SLi your clock speeds have to be the same or the faster card will slide back to the slower card's clocks. Ah, wait, nevermind, I misread your post. Overclock your core speed first then the memory. The memory overclock won't have that big of an effect, not as much as the core clock will. So, raise the core to whatever the safest highest clock you can be stable at then do the memory.

Am I right in thinking that the overclock sliders in the nvidia control panel adjust the clocks on both cards at the same time?

Is there an application that displays the current GPU clock speeds realtime, in the same way that CPUz does for CPU's as that would tell me exactly what was going on?

thanks

are you using the 93.71 or 93.81 drivers? if so look at the thread on 93.81 as ive explained there how overclock properly with those

I was just playing with my cards the other day overclocking with rivatuner. My default is 490/1300 and anything higher on the core, 495,496 all the way to my max 530 causes my cards to run slower and slower according to Aquamark3. The last driver I used where coolbits works, overclocking the card made my scores go up the higher I clocked.

I'm not sure what the scoop is.

Eliminator, you are 'the man'.

I followed your instructions and hey presto, it worked. My coolbits setting is at zero and I can do all my overclocking through RivaTuner. Overclocking the memory didn't make a lot of difference but upping the GPU to 496MHz added about 400 points. All I need now is a dual core CPU (FX60) which should bump my score up a descent amount and also my Rainbow six Vegas framerate.

Many thanks again

I was actually gonna' get the FX-60 myself- back when it was only $460 on newegg. But now it has gone up to like $535. So, I'm gonna' settle for the Opty 185. It costs practically $200 less but will perform and OC just as well.

You might consider that route yourself. ;)

Yeah the coolbits reg entry will also make nTune overclocking options appear in the nVidia CP if you are having trouble getting them to show up under Win XP Pro x64.

Once I installed nTune under x64 yet the options didn't show up.

no problem... also remember to rename the main rainbow six vegas .exe to unreal.exe.... huge boost for sli users
