View Full Version : Wiinja - The Wii gets modded.
It didn't take long. The Wii gets the (dubious) honor of being the first next gen console to have a MOD chip. This small chip resembles similar solutions developed in the PS-1 days and it allows booting of duplicated DVDs.
While some parents will now be less worried about their kids ruining the discs, somehow I doubt this will be the primary purpose of people modding their Wiis. The group of hackers responsible for the modding posted a couple of youtube videos to back their claims.
I won't provide links in this topic and I expect other people won't either. Understandeably, the boards administrators get anal when talking about "sensible" matters like piracy and hacking. The trigger happy lawyers from RIAA and other similar lobbysts are always on the watch

I vote for this thread to be deleted. We dont need such discussions here, even if there are no direct links to any of the stuff
this thread can stay imo. hes merely stating that a mod chip was made/released. in no way is he or anyone here endorsing it.

He's not posting links to games or even where you can get the chip. If you're a regular net user you have heard about this already anyway. Any movement to have a thread like this deleted is pure overreacting.
These are just news. There is always room for discussion. And debating "sensible" arguments like crime, terrorism and such does not make anyone automatically a criminal. ;)
PS: News are spreading fast and several gaming sites are reporting this as well.

I believe the X360 has had a mod chip for a couple of months at least now. Maybe not the same as this which I imagine is a traditional modchip on the mobo, but has the same effect of allowing pirated games to boot. It works by the DVD firmware hack thing that was discovered ages ago.

who cares. Even if sensitive "info" was posted, I would rather pay the $50 for a game like Zelda that to have to go through all that mod BS just to play a game.

It made major news on most tech sites. I have Google set up for RSS feeds and two different sites had it as front page news. HD-DVD & Blu-Ray encryption got hacked a few days ago; that also made front page news.
It actually makes for good discussion if those participating are reasonable.
I think it's actually quite lovely that HD & Blu-Ray encryption got destroyed before it got even got started. The problem with DRM & copy protection schemes is that they only hurt the paying customers. The pirates aren't planning on buying it anyway, and it doesn't stop them.
Wii hacking is a little different. IMHO, there is only one reason to mod a console, and we all know what that reason is.

I read abt this mod since its the rage on all the sites these days. And from the looks, its a pretty easy solder job. And from what we know of Nintendo's past, they are pretty lax when it comes to fighting these mods.

Actually I think this mod sucks. It is made only for piracy. If it only allowed me to run import wii games I'd mod my console in a second. I really want to get the Bleach game that is out in Japan.
