Is being talked about again, but the press release is scheduled for some time at the end of this month.

Interesting stuff to say the least. No wonder these 680i boards were pushed out prior to such an announcement.
(nana2) (3 PCI-E x16 slots (although the middle one only works @ x8).
Sounds like overkill to me. Maybe for a 30" monitor....

Nvidia Physics FTW!!:D
I'm totally up for it, unfortunately, I would lose all PCI slots though!!! :(

Yep...BYE BYE X-Fi.:(

Maybe Creative needs to make a PCI-E x4 edition of X-Fi. Then this may work.
I believe they showed a low end version at CES, I will do that if they offer it.

Couldn't they offer a high end model too? I mean PCI-E slots really have some nice bandwidth.

Steve Erickson, vice president for Creative's audio products:
As far as PCI Express (PCIe) is concerned, which is the next bus, what we found is that the performance of PCIe is truly bad for audio. We are seeing four times degradation on the bus for audio.
PCIe is designed for graphics and high data transfer, but audio sends very small packets and the overhead can be very big! Moving the data across PCIe is much, much higher than PCI. So what we have to do is go back to the drawing board and work on the transport part of the chip and re-design it to add more silicon to overcome some of the problems we had with PCIe. So for us to come up with a PCIe solution is going to take a while because we have to overcome the problems we're facing with that bus.
Nevermind.:(

Well there is no such thing like a "bye bye X-Fi" for me ;)

Wow.. things are down hill big time on these forums.. what is it with all the personal attacks and bitching ??
I still come here to read 'interesting stuff'.. but the flaming is getting out of hand.. time for the grown ups to smack the kidies.. where are all the mods ??
Cool! 3-way SLI means up to 6 GPUs to work together.
Another bashing thread. lmao
Is it like this in every thread? wowzer!
Ok, enough is enough. Stay On Topic please or do not post.

I''d be MUCH more interested in a physics solution that 3-way SLI.
Considering they can't even get 8800 SLI to work (well) with just 2 cards, this seems to be putting the cart in front of the horse.

My 8800 GTS SLI setup has been working brilliantly.

QFT.
Unless their magical driver for 3 way is the reason why SLI is lagging, then they really need to work at getting this done, and not worry about things like that yet.

Last I checked the ATX standard had 7 slots, so even 3 dual slot gpus leaves room for a soundcard. :D
@Maxthreat: Yea, that board would be perfect, and still have room for a soundcard.
BTW: holy mother of connectors! Is there like 10 satas on there?
That and what are the things to the left of the sound ports, they look like either firewire or more nics, but there is no way there are 4 nics on that mobo.
if nvidia is going to be using all these slots for there next version of sli then someone needs to sit down with all the chipmakers and design a bigger motherboard. its really starting to get cramped now.

Very true. I think they could even come up with a better way to put GPU's on the board.

external? i really do have a fealing that is the mainstream next step.as it stands now, there is not enough power and not enough rooms, going external would help fix both problems. so we could fit four boards and use and externla power source to power the thing. problems solved.

yea, NV already is using an external device for their quadro stuff. I think if the GFX went external, we all could have a lot smaller pcs, and just have another specialized box that could be plugged in to the tower. It would probably need a pretty decent sized connector, but if we could daisy chain boxes, you could just take your gfx where ever you wanted and plug it in. :D
Now that would be the day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the last major motherboard redesign the BTX?

Yes it was, but I think they quickly released it was a silly idea. Afaik the only difference is that the board was basically reversed, which causes major problems for heatpipes because all of the heat goes toward the chips instead of away. I don't think BTX was speced bigger either, think it had the same number of slots and size.
